Chelsea Faces Setback as Moisés Caicedo Misses Arsenal Clash
Chelsea’s plans for a statement performance against Arsenal were hit before a ball was kicked, with Moisés Caicedo left out of the squad entirely for Sunday’s Premier League clash.
The Ecuador midfielder, who only just returned from injury, was expected to be involved at Stamford Bridge after edging back toward full fitness. Instead, his name was missing from the team sheet, a significant setback for a Chelsea side still trying to find rhythm under Xabi Alonso.
Caicedo’s stop-start opening to the campaign continued in frustrating fashion. He had already been a surprise absentee from Chelsea’s league opener against Fulham, when Alonso revealed a “minor setback” had ruled him out. That knock also kept him sidelined for the midweek Carabao Cup win over Luton Town.
He did finally get back on the pitch against Brighton last weekend, but only briefly. Sent on as a second-half substitute, Caicedo lasted just 14 minutes before he had to come off, with Alonso later explaining that the problem “wasn’t something new.”
Even so, the club pushed to have him ready for Arsenal. The medical staff brought him close. Just not close enough.
“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” Alonso told Sky Sports before kick-off, underlining the decision to leave one of his key midfielders out of the matchday squad.
For Chelsea, it means going into a high-intensity London derby without their marquee ball-winner at the base of midfield. For Caicedo, it is another stop on a stuttering early-season road, with the next question already looming: how long until he is finally fit to stay fit?
