Chelsea vs Leeds: Caicedo Missing as Alonso Prioritizes Long-Term Health

Moises Caicedo will watch from the sidelines again. For Chelsea, that is the blunt reality going into Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United at Stamford Bridge.

He is not ready. Chelsea know it. Xabi Alonso has underlined it and has no intention of bending the plan for a third-round cup game.

Caicedo sat out the first two matches of the season, then lasted just 14 minutes against Brighton before hobbling off in clear discomfort. He missed the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal as well, and Chelsea have decided they will not roll the dice on their key midfielder.

Alonso has already spoken about avoiding “the same mistake”. The message is firm: no gamble, no rush, no short-term fix that risks long-term damage. The club take some comfort from the fact the issue is not considered “longer-term”, but that does nothing for their midfield options against Leeds.

He is not the only absentee. Marco Palestra is also ruled out. Jordan Henderson remains sidelined with the wrist problem he picked up at the World Cup, and Emmanuel Emegha will not feature either.

Alonso Holds the Line on Injuries

There is no cloak-and-dagger around Palestra’s situation. Chelsea are impressed by him and see a clear role for the new signing, but they will not cut corners.

“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

The frustration is obvious. Early-season injuries can stall momentum, especially for a player desperate to make a first impression. But Chelsea’s stance is deliberate. This is a long campaign, and the club will not compromise it for one night under the lights in the Carabao Cup.

The bigger priority sits just beyond Leeds: a home league game against Hull City on Saturday. That fixture shapes Alonso’s thinking as much as the visit of Leeds does.

Rotation on the Cards

With Hull looming, rotation is not just possible, it is expected.

Levi Colwill, who missed the Arsenal defeat with a minor fitness concern, is back in full training and available. That immediately strengthens the defensive options and gives Alonso licence to tweak his back line.

Mike Penders is in contention to start in goal, a chance for the goalkeeper to stake a claim in cup competition. Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are also in line for starts, fresh legs and fresh ideas in wide areas as Alonso looks to manage workloads without diluting intensity.

A likely Chelsea XI against Leeds could read:

Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.

It is a side that mixes regulars with players eager for minutes, and it underlines the balancing act at play: respect the cup, protect the league campaign.

Straightforward but Significant Team News

There are no grey areas in the medical bulletin.

  • Out: Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, Emegha.
  • Doubts: none.

Kick-off is at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9 at Stamford Bridge. Alonso will rotate where he can, but not his principles. Chelsea intend to chase progression in the Carabao Cup without losing sight of the league schedule that may yet define how far this project really goes.
