Chelsea vs Fulham: Alonso and Arbeloa's Premier League Debuts

Craven Cottage plays host tonight as Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso step into a Premier League dugout for the first time, Fulham against Chelsea under the lights by the Thames. Alonso shakes up Chelsea on opening night
The first Chelsea XI of the Alonso era does not read quite as expected.
Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra, both widely tipped to start, are missing from the side altogether this evening. The word from Chelsea is that their omissions are precautionary rather than a sign of anything more serious, but their absence still rips up plenty of pre-match predictions.
They are two of four changes from the Blues’ final pre-season outing against Real Sociedad. Wesley Fofana is unavailable through injury, while Pedro Neto drops to the bench as Alonso reshapes his attack and defence for his Premier League bow.
Into the fray come youth, energy and a hint of risk.
Josh Acheampong starts at right-back, Malo Gusto shifts across the back line, Jorell Hato is handed a big responsibility, and Romeo Lavia anchors the midfield. It is a side that screams technical quality and front-foot intent, but also one that will be tested physically from the first minute in this tight old ground.

Cole Palmer’s creativity, Joao Pedro’s movement and the direct running of Rogers give Alonso plenty of attacking variety. Behind them, Lavia and Reece James will be asked to control a congested midfield and protect a back four that has barely played together.
For a manager who built his coaching reputation on structure and control, this is a brave first selection.
Arbeloa sticks, not twists
On the opposite bench, Arbeloa has chosen stability.
Fulham line up with exactly the same XI that started their final pre-season warm-up. No late surprises, no dramatic reshuffles. The Spaniard trusts what he has seen over the summer and backs his side to carry that rhythm into the real thing.
Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios are both handed their Premier League debuts, a clear signal that Arbeloa is prepared to lean on fresh legs and fearless minds in key attacking areas.

There is steel in that midfield with Sander Berge and the industry of Alex Iwobi, width from Oscar Bobb, and the promise of Garcia and Palacios ahead of them. Behind, Calvin Bassey and Issa Cuenca will expect a busy evening against Chelsea’s mobile front line.
Same team, new stakes. Arbeloa’s first competitive selection in English football is measured and consistent, a contrast to the more experimental feel of Alonso’s choices.
A Spanish subplot in west London
Both managers arrive with Real Madrid on their CVs, both step into a league that will examine every tactical wrinkle and every substitution. One has rolled the dice a little. The other has doubled down on continuity.
