Chelsea Enters New Era as Clearlake Capital Assumes Full Control

Chelsea stepped into a starkly defined new era this week, as Clearlake Capital assumed full control of the club and ended the joint-ownership model that has shaped the past two years.

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, who each held a 12.83% stake, have sold their shares to Clearlake, turning the private equity firm’s previous 61.5% majority into an overwhelming grip on power. The move leaves Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano as the undisputed decision-makers at Stamford Bridge.

A “big day” for Chelsea

Speaking before Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Brentford on Friday, manager Xabi Alonso did not try to play down the significance.

“I think it is an important day for the club when there is an important change in the structure of the club, new ownership,” he told reporters on Thursday.

The Boehly-Walter period has been chaotic, expensive and endlessly scrutinised since their £2.5 billion takeover in 2022. Yet Alonso, who only arrived this summer, chose to underline the stabilising work they carried out in the aftermath of sanctions on former owner Roman Abramovich.

“Thanks to the former owners for what they have done. I was not here but I know that they played an important role,” he said, making a point of acknowledging the outgoing Americans before looking ahead.

Then he turned firmly to the new reality.

“Now that Behdad is taking more control, or almost full control, I think it is good that the main one is clear.”

Eghbali’s project – and Alonso’s buy‑in

If Clearlake now owns Chelsea on paper, Eghbali owns the vision in Alonso’s mind.

The Spaniard made it clear that his relationship with the co-founder of Clearlake sits at the heart of his belief in the project. Eghbali personally flew to Spain to sell him on Chelsea’s long-term plan, a detail Alonso was keen to highlight.

“I have a very good relationship with Behdad; he was the one who came to Madrid to explain the project to convince me and we are working well together,” Alonso explained.

He framed this season as just the beginning of a broader rebuild.

“As I have mentioned, this is phase one we have completed in project of the squad. It is good and now we move on together.”

Phase one done. Clearlake fully in charge. The hierarchy simplified. For a club that has lurched from one headline to the next, the message from the dugout was clear: one owner, one line of command, one direction.

Joao Pedro fitness cloud lingers

While the ownership headlines dominated, Alonso knows his immediate reality is far more basic: picking a team to win at Brentford.

Joao Pedro has been central to Chelsea’s bright start under their new manager. Three goals and three assists in the opening four Premier League matches have made the Brazilian a key figure in Alonso’s early blueprint.

His recent withdrawal from the Brazil squad with an injury concern, though, has raised alarms over his availability.

Alonso chose his words carefully.

“In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad, we are having the last training session tomorrow so no one is ruled out for us for Friday so I prefer to be cautious and we will be waiting until tomorrow to make the final decision on every player,” he said.

No one ruled out. No one fully guaranteed. Just like Chelsea’s season: everything still on the table, but now under one unmistakably defined power at the top.
