Chelsea's Thrilling 4-3 Victory Over Brighton: Caicedo's Injury Concerns and Martinez's Debut
Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton on Sunday delivered goals, chaos and, for Xabi Alonso, one unwelcome flash of anxiety around Moises Caicedo.
The Ecuadorian midfielder entered from the bench in the second half, only to be forced off not long after following a knock. Given his recent fitness issues, the sight of Caicedo signalling that he could not continue immediately raised alarms.
Alonso tried to steady the mood afterwards.
“We hope it is not a new injury, and that it is not more serious than the previous time,” the Chelsea manager said, making it clear the club will wait for proper tests before drawing conclusions. Caicedo, he explained, made the call himself. “He was cautious and decided to stop, and his feeling was not the best, but we have to assess his condition.”
The Spaniard stressed that, from the early signs, this did not look like a major setback compared to what Caicedo has already been through.
“It was not more than the previous time,” he continued. “He was cautious. His feeling was not the best. It was not something new.”
While Caicedo’s situation tempered the mood, the night also introduced a new presence between the posts that Alonso clearly believes can reshape the dressing room.
Martinez makes his mark
Emiliano Martinez’s Chelsea debut arrived with plenty of attention, and Alonso sounded genuinely taken with what he saw from the Argentine goalkeeper, beyond the raw numbers of saves and goals conceded.
“I am happy with his first impact,” Alonso said. “He has this charisma and aura that help him connect with the rest of the team.”
That connection started even before kick-off. The coach revealed a calm, straightforward build-up with his new No. 1.
“I spoke to him yesterday, we discussed the match, and he felt ready. I do not need to tell him many things for him to put in a good performance. He wanted to keep a clean sheet, but I was happy with his first impact.”
The clean sheet escaped him in a frantic seven-goal contest, but Alonso’s focus stayed on Martinez’s presence and personality – traits Chelsea hope will anchor a new era.
Neto’s future left open
While Martinez settled in and Caicedo’s fitness dominated the medical notes, another storyline bubbled in the background: Pedro Neto’s future.
Neto delivered a high-energy performance, the kind that only fuels interest from elsewhere. Reports have tied the winger to Manchester City and Al-Hilal, with the Saudi side especially eager to test Chelsea’s resolve.
Asked directly whether Neto would still be at Stamford Bridge by the end of the 2026 summer transfer window, Alonso refused to make any promises.
“In football, I do not guarantee anything,” he said. What he would guarantee, at least for now, was his appreciation for the winger’s display. “I was happy with Pedro’s brilliance. He played with a lot of energy. And he will be very important this season.”
