Charlton Stuns West Ham as Castellanos Misses Late Penalty

West Ham’s return to Championship life lurched into fresh trouble as Valentin Castellanos crashed a 93rd-minute penalty off target, allowing Charlton Athletic to escape east London with a derby win and all the noise.

In front of a sell-out 62,500 crowd, the Hammers’ afternoon began badly and never truly recovered. Charlton captain Lloyd Jones, the hero of last week’s comeback against Derby County, struck again – this time with a finish as audacious as it was avoidable from West Ham’s point of view.

A long throw from Sonny Carey was allowed to bounce in the penalty area, defenders rooted, hesitation everywhere. Jones reacted first, twisting his body and hooking an overhead kick beyond the keeper to stun the home support and ignite the 3,000 travelling fans.

West Ham saw plenty of the ball but carried little conviction. Charlton, compact and organised, looked far more certain of themselves, far more aware of how they wanted to hurt their hosts.

Second Half

After the break, the punishment grew harsher.

Tyreece Campbell, who had sealed Charlton’s win over Derby seven days earlier, pounced again. He robbed a dithering Konstantinos Mavropanos, surged into the box and bent a composed finish into the corner to double the lead. One mistake, ruthlessly punished; one end of the pitch in disbelief, the other in delirium.

Only then did West Ham begin to play with the urgency the situation demanded. They pinned Charlton back, recycled the ball, and finally forced a lifeline. Debutant Joel Piroe reacted quickest in the area, stabbing home from close range to drag the Hammers back into the contest and lift the volume to something approaching old levels.

Charlton retreated, bodies on the line, time ticking slowly. West Ham pressed, crosses rained in, and the tension ratcheted with every clearance and every near miss.

Deep into added time, the moment came. Conor Coventry was judged to have handled in the box. The referee pointed to the spot. Castellanos stepped up with the game, and perhaps the mood around West Ham’s season, in his hands.

He missed.

The ball went astray, the chance evaporated, and Charlton’s players punched the air as the final whistle followed soon after. West Ham were left with the sound of away celebrations ringing around their own stadium and the stark reality of a turbulent start that shows no sign of easing.
