Julian Alvarez's Barcelona Dream Faces Atletico Madrid's Firm Stance

Julian Alvarez’s Barcelona wish lingers – but Simeone draws a hard line at Atletico

The transfer window is ticking towards its close, and Julian Alvarez is still looking longingly towards FC Barcelona. The Argentine wants the move. Atletico Madrid, though, are slamming that door shut.

Inside the club, the message has been the same all summer: Alvarez is not for sale. Least of all to Barcelona.

He missed Atletico’s opening game of the 2026/27 season after returning late from World Cup duty, a delayed comeback that only added fuel to the speculation around his future. Now comes the awkward part.

A tense return, ready or not

Diego Simeone has decided there will be no hiding place. Alvarez will be in the squad for tomorrow’s clash with Villarreal.

“Yes, he’ll be in tomorrow’s squad and he’s better. He’s progressing at his own pace. We’ll try to manage a complicated, difficult match against a tough opponent with good players,” Simeone said, speaking to the media.

Leaving him out again would have spared Atletico a raw, emotional scene. Sections of the fanbase have already made their feelings clear about a player who appears to be looking elsewhere. Keeping him away from the Metropolitano for a little longer would have been the easy option.

The calendar even offered them cover. After Villarreal, Atletico won’t play at home again until September 16, when Osasuna visit. Between now and then: three straight away trips to Sevilla, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad.

Had Alvarez been omitted, his first game back in front of the home crowd would likely have come after the window had closed, with several away matches behind him to let his football do the talking and cool tempers.

Atletico have chosen the opposite route. They want him available now – for the team, and to confront the noise head-on.

Atletico push back against Barcelona narrative

Simeone did not just confirm Alvarez’s presence in the squad. He used the moment to hammer home the club’s stance on the forward’s future and to echo the words of CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin.

“Let it be clear, because at a moment when people are waiting for division and trying to create conflict and uncertainty, there is no uncertainty. Miguel Angel Gil Marin spoke clearly yesterday,” he said.

The message is blunt: Atletico believe pro-Barcelona outlets are stirring the pot, and they are refusing to play along.

For Simeone, Alvarez is not a bargaining chip. He is central to the project.

“For me, he’s an extremely important player for achieving our sporting objectives. We’ll be with him and look after him from a sporting perspective. Why? Because he’s our player. As long as he’s at Atletico, I’ll look after him.”

The Argentine coach admitted he has spoken with his striker, but he stopped short of claiming to fully understand Alvarez’s mindset. Only the player knows what he truly wants.

“It’s difficult to say how another person feels because I’m not that person. What I see is that he’s working in the best possible way, working with his teammates and showing respect to everyone.”

So the picture is clear. Alvarez may still dream in blaugrana, but Atletico are holding the line in red and white. The next chapter plays out not in a boardroom, but on the pitch against Villarreal – and under the unforgiving gaze of his own supporters.
