AS Monaco's New Era: Early Challenges Under Filipe Luís

AS Monaco’s new era under Filipe Luís hits its first Ligue 1 checkpoint on the road, with a tricky opener away at Le Havre AC – and a squad already stretched thin.

The Brazilian coach, only two games into the job, has barely had time to settle. His first taste of competitive action with Monaco came on Thursday night, a breathless 3-2 win over Górnik Zabrze in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League playoff. Now comes the quick turnaround: a domestic opener, an away trip, and a team sheet shaped as much by absences as by ambition.

Luís juggling absences and early-season fatigue

Luís will travel without several key options. Christian Mawissa is suspended. Jordan Teze, Ansu Fati and new arrival Mattias Abline are all sidelined through injury. Takumi Minamino and Folarin Balogun, central figures in Monaco’s attack last season, have been left out of the squad to be rested after Thursday’s European exertions.

It leaves Monaco light in experience in certain areas, but it also fast-tracks the integration of the club’s summer business.

Manchester City loanee Mathys Detourbet is expected to keep his place after starting in midweek, offering energy and control in midfield. Alongside him, Sadibou Sané, recruited from Metz, should again anchor the defence in what would be his second start for the club.

On the left, Flávio Nazinho is in line for his first competitive start in Monaco colours after joining from Cercle Brugge. Thrown straight into Ligue 1, he will have to adapt quickly in a back line that is still learning each other’s movements.

A new-look Monaco XI

With rotation dictated by injuries and the European schedule, Luís is likely to send out a side that blends newcomers with established pillars of the dressing room.

Probable Monaco XI vs Le Havre:

  • Lukas Hradecky;
  • Flávio Nazinho, Eric Dier, Sadibou Sané, Vanderson;
  • Mathys Detourbet, Lamine Camara, Denis Zakaria, Mamadou Coulibaly;
  • Mika Biereth, Aleksandr Golovin.

It is a line-up that leans on Golovin’s creativity and Zakaria’s authority, but also on fresh legs and fresh faces. For Luís, it’s an early test of depth, adaptability and resilience.

Monaco’s season starts here – on a tight turnaround, under strain, and already asking big questions of a squad still being built.
