Chadi Riad Ruled Out for Season After ACL Tear

Crystal Palace have been hit by a major early-season blow, with Morocco international Chadi Riad ruled out for the rest of the campaign after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

The 21-year-old centre-back sustained the injury in the second half of Palace’s match against Everton, collapsing in obvious pain before being carried off on a stretcher in the 70th minute. According to the Daily Mail, scans this week confirmed the worst: a torn cruciate ligament and a season wiped out before it had really begun.

For Riad, it is a brutal setback and a familiar one. It is the second serious knee injury of his career, another long spell on the sidelines just as he was trying to build momentum in south London. He had already endured time out during his first season at the club, having arrived from Barcelona in a £12 million deal.

The contrast with last season could hardly be sharper. After a difficult start to life at Selhurst Park, Riad forced his way back into the picture over the closing months, earning regular minutes and the trust of the coaching staff. His rise culminated in a starting place in the UEFA Conference League final, where he helped Palace beat Rayo Vallecano to lift the trophy and close the campaign on a high.

That run was supposed to be a springboard. This year was meant to be about consolidation, about turning promise into permanence and nailing down a place in the heart of the defence. Instead, those plans have been ripped up in one awkward landing.

The injury also complicates Palace’s defensive plans. The club had already moved to strengthen at the back, bringing in Axel Disasi on loan from Chelsea and edging towards a deal for Joel Ordóñez from Club Brugge. What looked like smart competition for places now feels more like essential cover.

Riad will disappear into the long, lonely grind of rehabilitation. Palace, suddenly lighter at centre-back than they expected to be, must decide whether their summer business is enough – or whether this cruel twist forces them back into the market.
