Cavan Sullivan’s Rise: Philadelphia Union Prodigy Joins U.S. Friendlies

Cavan Sullivan’s rise takes another sharp turn this fall.

The 16-year-old Philadelphia Union prodigy will be among the 26 players called in by Mauricio Pochettino for a four-game U.S. friendly slate running from Sept. 26 to Oct. 6, a reward for a blistering stretch of form that has dragged a once-stumbling Union side firmly into the playoff picture.

This isn’t a token invitation. Sullivan has been driving Philadelphia’s resurgence, not just decorating it. Since the World Cup break, the Union have not lost a league match, and the teenager has become the face of that revival, demanding the ball, breaking lines, and changing games that used to drift away from them.

His name has echoed through U.S. Soccer corridors for years. Sullivan has long been embedded in the U.S. Youth National Team pathway, first pulling on the shirt at U-15 level and steadily climbing through the age groups. Coaches kept pushing him up. He kept looking comfortable.

Next Threshold

Now comes the next threshold.

If Sullivan steps onto the field in any of those four senior friendlies, he will become the second-youngest player ever to appear for the U.S. men’s national team. Only Freddy Adu, who debuted in January 2006, would sit ahead of him in the record books.

That possibility hasn’t exactly caught him off guard. Earlier this month, the youngster admitted he was hungry for a U.S. opportunity. He’s been playing like it ever since.

The question now is no longer whether Sullivan belongs in the conversation. It’s how quickly he can turn this first taste of the senior stage into something permanent.
