Canadian Fans Snag Qatar’s Free World Cup Tickets Ahead of Key Match
VANCOUVER — Although fans from Qatar have access to free tickets for World Cup matches thanks to government backing, fewer may attend the upcoming Group B game against Canada in Vancouver on Thursday. The Qatar Football Association teamed with its government to cover travel expenses for 1,000 Middle Eastern fans journeying to North America for the tournament. This included chartering three Qatar Airways flights to San Francisco for their 1–1 draw with Switzerland, but bringing fans to Canada while maintaining fully funded tickets has proved challenging.
Qatar fans entered a lottery to secure flights and about 800 had their travel costs covered, including hotels. Yet many tickets surfaced across North America through social media promotions, catching the attention of Canadian supporters.
Tickets Taken by Canadian Fans Through Loose Verification
Sources tell Sports Illustrated that Canadians managed to obtain these free tickets because the process lacked strict controls. Interested individuals registered on the Qatar FA’s website, providing FIFA ticket account details along with personal info and the Arab country they identified with. The only rule was claiming an Arab country, but no verification ensured applicants truly belonged to that nation, allowing people to select any Arab country regardless of their actual ties.
“I just decided to sign up, so I put my name, said I was Arab, and put the country that my family is from... I sent the request without expecting much, then a week later I got an email from the Qatar Football Association and another from FIFA with the ticket,” shared one fan, who preferred to stay anonymous fearing ticket cancellation. “No proof was requested—no birth certificate or anything. It was simply a claim that you were Arab and choosing a country.”
Reports suggest over 150 Canadian fans, decked out in their national colors, secured these free tickets, a stark contrast to the high prices seen on official and resale markets. Outside of these complimentary tickets, the cheapest available options started at $80, mainly accessible to members of Canadian supporters group The Voyageurs.
Those lucky enough to claim Qatar’s tickets also received official merchandise to wear during the match. Still, Canadian ticket holders are expected to show up in full national gear, eager to see their team achieve its first-ever men's World Cup victory after earning a point in their opening 1–1 draw in Toronto.
“Sure, there will be some genuine Qatar fans and perhaps Arab residents cheering for their team,” the anonymous fan added. “But I believe most will be Canadian.”
Attempts to get comments from Qatar’s FA and media representatives went unanswered before publication.
Qatar’s Fan Presence and Logistics
At the opening match against Switzerland, Qatar fans appeared in strong numbers. They marched through San Francisco streets before the game, with reports from SFGate indicating attendance was mandatory for those staying in San Francisco hotels, though optional for guests in Santa Clara near Levi’s Stadium.
In Vancouver, Tariq Ali Faraj Al Ansari, Qatar’s Ambassador to Canada, confirmed his country’s diplomatic mission arranged all logistical support for the national team and traveling fans.
Hundreds of Qatar supporters are still expected at the stadium for this crucial Group B clash, but Canadian fans will likely occupy many seats. Both sides face pressure to win, as victory could boost their chances to advance and potentially top the group on the final matchday.
