Callum Whelan urges Carlisle United to fight harder

Callum Whelan says Carlisle United must “run harder” and “fight harder” if they are to jolt their faltering season back into life.

The midfielder did not sugar-coat a grim afternoon in Hampshire, where a 1-0 defeat at Eastleigh stretched Carlisle’s winless run to four games and left them just two points above the relegation zone.

For a side tipped as one of the pre-season favourites, the numbers are stark. Two wins from nine. Thirteen points behind unbeaten leaders Boreham Wood. A campaign that was supposed to be about promotion already feels like a salvage job.

“That wasn’t good enough”

Whelan, back on the pitch for the first time since the opening day after a hamstring injury, came off the bench at Eastleigh and watched Carlisle slide to what he called the lowest point of their season so far.

“I hope that was a blip on its own because that wasn’t good enough,” he told BBC Radio Cumbria.

He wasn’t interested in tactical excuses.

“System, formation, I’m not really interested. We didn’t run harder than the opposition, we didn’t fight harder, we lost too many duels. It’s not what we pride ourselves on.”

The frustration has been building for the 27-year-old. While he has been sidelined, Carlisle have struggled to adapt under new head coach Rob Elliot, dropping points as the early weeks of the season slipped away.

Almost a fifth of the campaign has gone. The table is beginning to take shape. Carlisle are stuck in the wrong half of it.

Time for responsibility

The mood in Whelan’s words was clear: the time for waiting is over.

“I’m a bit fed up of saying ‘when it clicks’ and ‘when, when, when’,” he said.

“As a group of players, we’ve got to start taking responsibility. First of all, making sure we win games but performing way better than that and working way harder than that.”

Carlisle were supposed to be hunting down the leaders by now, not glancing nervously over their shoulders. If Whelan’s rallying cry lands in the dressing room, the response over the coming weeks will tell whether this is just an early-season stumble or the start of something far more troubling.
