Bruno Guimaraes Set for First Arsenal Start in Community Shield
Bruno Guimaraes is set for his first Arsenal start – and it could come on one of English football’s traditional curtain-raiser stages, against Manchester City in the Community Shield.
The Brazilian midfielder, a summer arrival and already under the spotlight, stepped off the bench in the Gunners’ final pre-season outing against Como in midweek. Now, with competitive football finally back, he is pushing to go straight into Mikel Arteta’s XI in Cardiff.
Big names back, but handled with care
Arsenal’s squad will look far more like the real thing on Sunday. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are all due to return to the fold after missing the entirety of pre-season so far.
None of the trio has played a minute this summer, having only rejoined training at the start of the week following extended breaks after the World Cup. The club eased them back in, but the intensity has ramped up in recent days at the training ground and Arteta has cleared them for involvement.
“They will be available,” Arteta said at his pre‑match press conference. “They trained with us today, they will train tomorrow. If they are in the condition we expect them to be, they will be involved.”
Available, though, is not the same as ready to start. Arsenal are expected to manage their minutes carefully, which opens the door for Guimaraes to anchor the midfield from kick-off.
Guimaraes to lead, youngsters to support
If Arteta does hold back his returning stars, Guimaraes is likely to line up alongside Myles Lewis‑Skelly, the academy graduate who has quietly pieced together an impressive summer by starting every pre-season game.
That blend – a marquee midfielder finding his feet and a fearless youngster who has already found his rhythm – gives Arsenal a different look in the middle of the pitch. It also allows the manager to keep Rice and Zubimendi on a tighter leash as they build sharpness.
At the back, the options are thinner. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba remain unavailable, so the responsibility falls again on Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera on the right side of defence, with Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori expected to complete the back four in front of David Raya.
Tzolis makes his case, Havertz leads the line
Further forward, one of the stories of Arsenal’s summer has been Christos Tzolis. The winger has been among the standout performers in pre-season and has given Arteta a genuine selection call on the left flank.
He is pushing to start ahead of Gabriel Martinelli, whose name has been consistently linked with a move to Turkey. Tzolis’s form, combined with the uncertainty around Martinelli’s future, could tilt the decision his way.
Martin Odegaard will again pull the strings in the No10 role, with Ethan Dowman another youngster in contention to start in the line of three behind the striker.
Up front, the pattern under Arteta is clear. When the games feel big, he trusts Kai Havertz. The German is often the preferred option in Arsenal’s marquee fixtures, and the Community Shield against City fits that mould.
