Benjamin Sesko's Remarkable Comeback at Manchester United
Benjamin Sesko walks back into the spotlight with the calm of a man who feels his body finally belongs to him again.
For months, his shins dictated the pace of his young Manchester United career. They cut short his debut season, wrecked his pre-season, and turned what should have been a smooth second-year launch into a stop-start slog. Now, after an assertive return to the starting XI in the Champions League, the Slovenian striker is convinced that chapter is closed.
“It was basically just to make sure that it doesn't get worse,” he explained of the club’s conservative plan around his comeback. The medical team slowed everything down, much to his frustration at the time. No shortcuts. No bravado. Just patience. “We just need a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early, it might appear again. And I think waiting a little bit longer was a great decision, and now it's healed, so it's perfect. It was shin.”
This was not a freak twist or a single awkward landing. The problem had been brewing. It traced back to the end of last season: a heavy kick, constant contact, and the relentless demands of Premier League football all piling onto a 23-year-old frame still adjusting to England’s tempo.
“I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit of an overload from myself. So basically, that was it,” he admitted.
The timing was cruel. Sesko had already battled through the usual adaptation storm that hits most new arrivals from the Bundesliga. New league, new rhythm, new scrutiny – and still he found a way to score 12 goals in his first campaign. Just as he looked set to build on that, his body called a halt.
The club’s answer was to slow him down to speed him up. No rush back for the sake of optics, no temptation to throw him into early-season chaos just because the fixtures demanded it. The striker, known for his explosiveness, had to learn to wait.
Now he feels the difference not only in his legs but in his life.
“Way better, especially than last season,” Sesko said when asked about his current state of mind. The move from Germany to England hit him harder than many realised. New city, new language environment, new expectations, and the weight of Old Trafford on his shoulders. “I changed a country. Everything was new for me. Now for me it's like I'm really enjoying it. I'm really happy here. I love life here. I have teammates that are perfect. I can't really complain about anything.”
That sense of ease has been a long time coming. United had tracked him since he was 16, one of those names quietly circulating in scouting reports and internal meetings. The club wanted him early. He chose a different route.
Instead of leaping straight into the Premier League spotlight from Red Bull Salzburg or even from Slovenia, Sesko and his camp mapped out a slower climb. Salzburg to Leipzig, then Leipzig to Manchester United. Each move a deliberate step up in pressure and quality, rather than a jump into the deep end.
“It was just basically the moment that we decided because I think it was important,” he said. “It would be a little bit too huge of a step for me to jump from, let’s say, Austria or Slovenia directly to Manchester United. So I just needed those steps to get better and better and I’m finally here.”
Now the shin is healed, the doubts are quiet, and the groundwork he insisted on taking is in place. The question no longer hangs over whether Benjamin Sesko is ready for Manchester United.
It’s how far he can go now that nothing is holding him back.
