Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers on Loan: Aiming for Trophies

Ben Godfrey has arrived at Ibrox with a point to prove and a clear message: he is here to help Rangers win trophies.

The former Everton and Norwich City defender has joined on loan from Atalanta, with the Scottish club securing an option to make the move permanent next summer. At 28, this is not a prospect’s gamble but a career reset for a player who has drifted to the fringes in recent seasons.

His path to Glasgow has not been straightforward. Game time dried up in Italy, and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Brondby, making 12 appearances as the Danish side finished fourth in the Superliga. Useful minutes, but hardly the stage a player of his ambition wants to occupy for long.

Now comes a very different platform. Rangers, with all the weight and expectation that badge carries.

"I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here," Godfrey said, the relief as clear as the excitement. He spoke with the awareness of someone who knows exactly what he is walking into. "I know the size of the club. I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times."

That line tells the story. This is not a player content just to rebuild quietly in the background. He has nailed his colours to the mast from day one: trophies, pressure, big occasions. Exactly what Rangers demand, and exactly what his career has been missing since his peak Premier League years at Everton.

For Rangers, the deal carries obvious appeal. A versatile defender with English top-flight experience, arriving initially on loan but with the safety net of an option to buy. If Godfrey rediscovers his best form, the club can move quickly to secure him long term. If not, they are not locked into a costly commitment.

For Godfrey, it is simpler. This is a chance to step back into the glare of a demanding football city, to swap the frustration of the bench for the expectation of a support that measures success in medals, not minutes.

He called it a "massive honour" to join Rangers. The honour will feel even greater if he is still at Ibrox next summer, not as a loanee passing through, but as a defender who has earned the right to stay by helping deliver the silverware he has already promised to chase.
