Barcelona's Bardghji Suffers Second ACL Tear, Transfer Plans Impacted
Barcelona’s summer plans took a brutal twist on Tuesday as the club confirmed that winger Bardghji has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, a serious injury that wipes out any chance of a move before the transfer window shuts on September 1.
The 20-year-old Sweden international went down during training on Monday. Subsequent medical tests delivered the worst possible news: a complete rupture that will require surgery in the coming days and months of rehabilitation.
For Bardghji, the timing could hardly be more ruthless. He had been preparing to leave the Spanish champions after clear talks with the club’s hierarchy about his future and lack of minutes.
Told to find a new club, then struck down
In the days leading up to the injury, coach Hansi Flick had spoken openly with Bardghji about his situation. According to ESPN, Flick informed the forward that breaking into the first team this season would be extremely difficult, urging him to look for a move away from Barça to secure regular football.
To reduce the risk of exactly this kind of scenario, Barcelona had already taken precautions. Bardghji was left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, a protective measure as transfer interest began to build around Europe, including from Premier League sides.
The plan was simple: keep him safe, get a deal done, give him a fresh start.
Then came Monday’s training session. And everything changed.
Second major knee blow
This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this particular nightmare. The winger has now torn the ACL in his right knee for the second time, having suffered the same serious injury while playing for Copenhagen in 2024.
Barcelona signed him last summer from the Danish club in a deal worth around €2 million. In his debut season in Spain he featured 28 times across all competitions, scoring two goals. Most of those appearances came off the bench, and his role was already under threat before this latest setback.
The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi this summer pushed him further down the pecking order, sharpening the need for a move. Instead of a new club and a fresh chapter, he now faces the familiar grind of surgery and rehab.
Window shuts, options vanish
With the transfer window closing on September 1, the diagnosis effectively shuts down any chance of a departure in this market. No club is likely to commit to a long-term deal while he faces months on the sidelines, and Barcelona know they will be overseeing his recovery in-house.
The club confirmed that Bardghji will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation programme in Barcelona. His season, in practical terms, has been rewritten. Rather than fighting for minutes or settling into a new dressing room, he will spend the campaign working to rebuild the same knee that already betrayed him once.
For a 20-year-old who had been preparing to step out of the shadows, it is a cruel pause. The question now is not where Bardghji will play next, but how strongly he can come back from a second major knee injury before his career has truly begun.
