Aurélien Tchouaméni's Strategic Comeback at Real Madrid

José Mourinho has a plan, and Aurélien Tchouaméni is right at the heart of it.

The French midfielder is edging back into Real Madrid’s engine room after a long and complicated injury layoff, and nothing about his return is being left to chance.

A Return Measured in Minutes

First came 11 minutes against Inter Milan in the Champions League a week ago. Then 21 minutes against Rayo Vallecano three days later. Small steps, but deliberate ones.

Spanish newspaper AS reports that Tchouaméni will not start Tuesday’s league match against Elche. That doesn’t mean he’ll be a bystander. The expectation is that he will be on the pitch for more than half an hour, another calculated increase in workload.

Mourinho made the plan clear without revealing every detail.

“He will get more minutes on the pitch, without doubt. He keeps improving, becoming stronger and more confident. He will certainly play, but I will not specify the number of minutes he will play,” the Real Madrid coach said before the Elche clash.

Plugging a Weak Spot

Inside the club, the technical staff are impatient to see the “old” Tchouaméni again: disciplined, tidy, and ruthless in front of his own box.

They see him as a crucial shield on the edge of the penalty area, an area that has too often looked fragile for this Real Madrid side. His reading of danger, his timing in the tackle, his ability to close passing lanes – all of it is part of the defensive balance Mourinho wants back as soon as possible, but not at any cost.

So the comeback continues, slowly but relentlessly. Every extra minute, every new session, has been weighed up and signed off. The priority is simple: no relapse. Real Madrid want him back fully fit, not just available.

Seventy-Three Days of Work

AS details the grind behind the scenes. Long hours in the gym. Endless physiotherapy. Individual sessions on pitch number 3 at the training complex, each drill loaded with caution.

The good news: Aurélien has not felt pain for several weeks. The human side: he is still anxious, still aware of how quickly everything can go wrong, but doing his best to stay calm.

The staff track his playing time like a lab experiment, nudging it up bit by bit. No wonder. The injury was not straightforward.

It hit 73 days ago, just before the World Cup round-of-16 match against Paraguay, when he felt pain in his thigh. He pushed through and played in the semi-final against Spain a few weeks later. The gamble backfired. He left the tournament injured, spent his holiday in treatment rooms instead of on beaches, and missed the start of La Liga.

Eyes on the Derby

Now comes the real target.

AS reports that Tchouaméni has a strong chance of starting in the Madrid derby against Atlético at the Wanda Metropolitano next Sunday. That is the stage Mourinho and his staff are working towards: a fully fit Tchouaméni, anchoring the midfield in one of the fiercest games of the season.

For now, it’s Elche, more minutes, another test passed or failed.

The question is no longer whether he will return. It’s whether, by the time the derby kicks off, he will be ready to dictate it.
