Arsenal Secures Ezri Konsa for £50m Plus Add-Ons
Arsenal have finally landed the defender Mikel Arteta has been pushing for – and paid a premium to do it.
Transfer Fee: £50m-plus for Ezri Konsa
Konsa deal agreed
Posting on X, Romano wrote that Arsenal have agreed a fee of £50m plus add-ons for Konsa, with a long-term contract in place for the England international. The 28-year-old is expected to undergo his medical within the next 48 hours before putting pen to paper at Arsenal.
The Athletic backed up the news, reporting a slightly higher guaranteed fee of £51m plus add-ons and stating that Konsa’s medical is scheduled for Thursday.
Either way, the outcome is the same: one of Aston Villa’s standout performers is on his way to north London.
Konsa has been Villa’s most reliable defender for several seasons, a cornerstone of Unai Emery’s back line and a key figure in their rise into the Champions League places. His performances earned him a place in England’s World Cup squad, where he impressed on the biggest stage and cemented his reputation as a top-level, modern defender.
Arteta gets his “top target”
The move comes at a critical moment for Arsenal’s back line. William Saliba is sidelined with a back problem, Jurrien Timber is out with a groin injury, and Arteta wanted a defender he could trust immediately – someone comfortable both at centre-back and at right-back.
Konsa ticks both boxes. He brings Premier League experience, Champions League exposure with Villa, and the versatility Arteta demands from his back four.
Romano has described Konsa as Arsenal’s “top target all summer”, a player the club have been tracking and working on for weeks as part of a broader squad reshaping that has already seen four first-team signings arrive.
- Illan Meslier has come in as goalkeeping cover.
- Piero Hincapie’s loan has been made permanent to deepen the defensive pool.
- Bruno Guimaraes has been added to stiffen the midfield.
- Christos Tzolis has been brought in on the left wing, effectively taking the place of Leandro Trossard.
Another high-profile left winger remains on the shopping list, and if that deal drops, Gabriel Martinelli will be allowed to leave. A more ruthless centre-forward is also being sought.
But the immediate priority was clear: secure a defender who can start now. Konsa is that signing.
The one that got away
Arsenal did not arrive at Konsa without exploring other avenues. On his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that the club first tried to prise Marc Pubill away from Atletico Madrid in recent weeks.
They got nowhere.
“Atleti had no intention at all to negotiate or discuss,” Romano reported. Pubill stays put, Arsenal move on, and Konsa becomes the focus.
The failed pursuit of Pubill only sharpened Arsenal’s push for Konsa. With the season’s demands looming and injuries already biting, there was no room for hesitation.
Now the deal is agreed, the medical is imminent, and Arteta is about to add one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders to a squad built to challenge on every front.
If this is the level of depth Arsenal are assembling in August, what will this team look like when the window finally slams shut?
