Arsenal Injury Update: Saka and Rice Available for Manchester City Clash
Arsenal have been handed exactly the lift they wanted before Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City, with Mikel Arteta confirming Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are back in the frame.
The pair, who had been doubts for the curtain-raiser, trained with the squad and are on course to feature, as is new signing Martin Zubimendi. Arteta cut a confident figure in his pre-match press conference, making it clear his big names are ready to step back into the spotlight.
“They will be available, they trained with us today, they will train tomorrow and if they are in the condition that we expect them to be, they will be involved,” he said, underlining just how strong his options look in midfield and attack.
The Arsenal manager also highlighted the attitude of a group that has barely paused for breath after a hectic summer. Many players cut short their breaks to report back early, something that clearly impressed him.
“Most of them [came back] earlier than expected, really fit with all the testing and they all seem in great condition,” Arteta noted, pointing to a squad that looks sharp and focused before the champions’ first big test of the season.
Defensive headaches linger
The picture is far less straightforward at the back.
Arteta confirmed that Jurrien Timber and William Saliba will both sit out the clash with Enzo Maresca’s side as they continue their rehabilitation. For Saliba, the outlook is particularly bleak, with the Frenchman facing what Arteta bluntly called a “long-term injury.”
Timber’s situation carries more hope, but not enough to throw him straight back into competitive action. Arsenal are treading carefully.
“Jurrien is progressing really well,” Arteta said. “He is on the pitch, we are ramping up now with certain actions and especially the volume and the load. I think he is on a good trajectory, but there is still a few weeks to go. Wilo, as we all know, it's more a long-term injury.”
Timber’s importance to Arteta’s tactical structure is not in doubt. His versatility and comfort in multiple roles made him a key piece before injury halted his momentum. Now, the plan is to ease him back in without risking a setback.
The next seven to ten days will be critical. That is when Timber is expected to begin reintegrating with the group in full training, moving from controlled work on the grass to the more chaotic demands of team sessions.
“We have to wait and see,” Arteta explained. “He needs to start to train with the group in the next week or so hopefully, and then see how he progresses from there. It's been a long-term issue, and we want to make sure that every step that we take is the right one, he feels right to do that, because he's such an important player for us.”
Eyes still on the market
While injuries shape the immediate selection picture, the longer-term build continues behind the scenes.
With the transfer deadline edging closer and links to several high-profile defenders swirling, Arteta refused to be drawn on individual targets. He did, however, leave no doubt about the scale of Arsenal’s ambition or their willingness to keep reshaping the squad.
“I am not going to talk about an individual but what I can obviously tell you is [about] the ambition of the club,” he said. “It is big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad, in order to achieve. We have detected some areas that they can be a strength in – that is what we are trying to do.”
Saka and Rice back, Timber edging closer, Saliba sidelined, and the market still alive: Arsenal step into Sunday knowing exactly where they stand. The question now is whether this evolving squad is already strong enough to trade blows with City from day one of the season.
