Mikel Arteta heads into a statement London derby with one eye on Chelsea and the other on the treatment room – but the Arsenal manager insists the news is largely encouraging.
The Gunners welcome Chelsea to the Emirates on Sunday with both clubs defending perfect Premier League records, and Arteta moved to calm fears over several key names when he faced the media.
Mosquera scare downplayed
Cristhian Mosquera’s early withdrawal in Monday’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa sparked concern, but Arteta framed it as a calculated decision rather than a fresh crisis.
Mosquera started at Villa Park before being replaced by Ezri Konsa, and the Arsenal boss revealed the change was driven by caution.
“He was more a precaution than anything else, so we'll have to see tomorrow in the session how he feels,” Arteta said, with the Spaniard still being assessed ahead of Sunday.
Mosquera was not among those pictured in training at London Colney on Thursday, leaving a minor question mark over his involvement against Chelsea.
Timber edging towards long-awaited return
The more uplifting development came at full-back. Jurrien Timber, who has not played a minute this season after undergoing a minor groin procedure in the summer, has stepped up his recovery and is edging closer to a return.
Timber was seen in light training on Thursday and Arteta hinted the defender is now at least in the conversation for the Chelsea game.
“Yeah, he's in really good condition at the moment. As I said, he's been now a few weeks on the pitch and he's been training with us now, so he's in a good place,” Arteta explained.
An “outside chance” is all it is for the weekend, but after months of waiting, even that represents a significant boost for Arsenal’s defensive options.
Guimaraes a doubt after fresh knock
Bruno Guimaraes is the latest concern. The Brazilian picked up another knock in the win at Villa and is being monitored closely.
Guimaraes already missed the opening 3-0 victory over Coventry City, having suffered a problem in the Community Shield win over Manchester City. Now his availability for Chelsea is uncertain.
“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he's been assessed. Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training,” Arteta said.
Like Mosquera, Guimaraes was not seen in Thursday’s training images, adding a layer of intrigue to Arteta’s midfield selection for Sunday.
Saliba’s inclusion hints at earlier return
There was a quieter but important development at centre-back. William Saliba, sidelined with a serious back issue sustained at the World Cup, has been named in both Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad and their Champions League list.
That decision suggests the club believe the Frenchman could be back before January, when squads can be resubmitted.
Arteta struck a measured note when asked for an update.
“Yes, we don't really know the amount of weeks he's going to be out because it's about a healing process in the beginning, it's a bit different,” he said. “We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”
The message is clear: optimism, but on the body’s terms, not the calendar’s.
