Andros Townsend Survives Terrifying Pitch Roller Accident in Thailand
Andros Townsend has survived a genuinely frightening incident in Thailand after being run over by a heavy pitch roller during PT Prachuap’s pre-match warm-up at Tinsulanon Stadium.
The 35-year-old former England winger was taking part in the team’s preparations before the Thai League 1 clash with Pattani FC when the collision unfolded near the touchline. Attempting an aerial backheel close to the sideline, Townsend landed in the path of a moving ground roller and was struck full on, with the machine rolling over his hip and thigh.
For a few seconds, the scene was chaotic. Video circulating on social media shows the roller trundling across the surface before making contact with the ex-Premier League winger, who then disappears beneath the heavy equipment. Teammates screamed, some instinctively turning away in horror, while others sprinted towards the stricken player as panic rippled around the stadium.
Townsend was left trapped under the rolling mill as staff and players desperately tried to help. Medical personnel rushed in and immediately began assessing him on the turf, the concern clear from the reaction of those nearby. Given the weight of the machinery and the area of impact, fears of a serious, even career-ending injury were very real.
The outcome, though, was remarkable.
After being checked over on the pitch and receiving further treatment, Townsend was able to make it back to the substitutes’ bench. Bruised and clearly shaken, but not broken. Scans and more detailed examinations are still to come, yet the initial verdict was that he had escaped major damage to his hip and thigh.
As the shock slowly eased, the match itself played out in stark contrast to the pre-game chaos. PT Prachuap took control, racing into a 3-0 lead through goals from Saharat Kanyaroj, Taoua Ferreira and Edgar Mendez. With the points effectively sealed and stoppage time ticking away, Townsend completed an improbable turnaround to his night by stepping onto the pitch as a late substitute.
Only hours earlier he had been pinned under a piece of ground equipment. Now he was back on the grass, helping his side see out a comfortable win.
Townsend joined PT Prachuap after a short spell at Kanchanaburi Power, following his time in Turkey with Antalyaspor. His move to Thailand came after a long Premier League career that took him from Tottenham Hotspur to Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Everton and Luton Town, along with 13 caps for England.
PT Prachuap’s victory keeps their league campaign on track, but the club’s focus now turns to ensuring their marquee signing comes through the next round of medical checks unscathed. Further evaluations on his hip and thigh are planned over the coming days to confirm there is no hidden damage.
The footage of the incident has already travelled far beyond Thai League 1, shared widely across the global football community. A freak moment, a heavy machine, and a player with nothing more than painful bruises to show for it.
Given what could have happened, Townsend walking back onto a football pitch the same night feels less like routine matchday drama and more like a narrow escape that might just change how clubs think about safety on their own training grounds.
