Andros Townsend Escapes Pitch Roller Incident in Thailand
Andros Townsend has had hostile away days in his career. This one was different.
The former England winger was warming up for PT Prachuap in Thai League 1 on Saturday when a routine pre-match ritual turned surreal. As Townsend moved through his drills at Pattani, a member of the ground staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller, sending it veering towards the 35-year-old.
For a brief, alarming moment, Townsend’s left leg became trapped under the machine.
Teammates and staff rushed over. The roller stopped. Somehow, he emerged without serious injury.
No stretcher. No treatment break. Just a shake of the head, a few nervous laughs, and eventually, a substitution board.
Townsend came off the bench later in the game and played his part in a comfortable 3-0 win for PT Prachuap, turning a potentially serious accident into one of the strangest footnotes of his long career.
The former Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Luton forward, capped 13 times by England, quickly turned to humour once the dust – and the grass cuttings – had settled. On Instagram, he joked that playing away at Stoke “wasn’t so bad after all,” a nod to one of his recent posts where he had compared a sun-soaked Thai away day to those cold, unforgiving trips to the Bet365 Stadium.
This time, the weather was kinder. The equipment wasn’t.
Townsend’s leg may have been briefly under a roller, but his instinct to laugh it off underlined why he has adapted so comfortably to life in Thailand. The football is different, the climate is different, the culture is different.
The jeopardy, as it turns out, is just as real.
