Andros Townsend has survived Stoke away. Thailand, though, has thrown something very different at him.

The former England winger was involved in a bizarre pre-match incident in Thai League 1 on Saturday night when he was actually run over by a pitch roller before PT Prachuap’s game at Pattani.

Townsend, now 35, was going through his warm-up when a member of the Pattani staff appeared to lose control of the heavy machine. It trundled straight into the ex-Tottenham and Crystal Palace winger, knocking him over as his left leg briefly became trapped underneath.

For a few seconds, it looked ugly. A roller, not a reckless challenge, threatening to cut short his evening.

He got up. He played. He even came on late in the match as Prachuap wrapped up a 3-0 away win.

Once the final whistle had gone and the shock had worn off, Townsend did what he has increasingly done in this late chapter of his career: he turned it into content.

A regular on ITV’s punditry team and now something of a cult figure online, Townsend headed to Instagram to joke about the incident, leaning into an old English football cliché. He referenced a recent post where he had contrasted the harsh, windswept away days at Stoke City’s stadium with the sun-soaked backdrops of Thai football.

“It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why,” he wrote on his Instagram story, inviting followers to watch the clip of the roller collision.

Thai fans lapped it up. One post hailed him as “The King of Memes in Thai League history”. Townsend replied simply: “trust me” – punctuated with four laughing emojis.

From cold Tuesday nights in the Premier League to getting flattened by a pitch roller in Thailand, Townsend has found a way to turn even the strangest moments of his career into something else entirely: a running joke the whole football world can share.
