Julian Alvarez Weighs Arsenal Move Amid Atletico's Firm Stance
Julian Alvarez’s future has been dragged to the edge of a decision, and the clock is ticking loudly in both Madrid and north London.
Spanish journalist Pedro Morata reports that the forward is expected to decide today whether to open formal negotiations with Arsenal or stay put at Atletico Madrid. Not long ago, that sentence would have sounded absurd. Alvarez had made it clear he would only consider Barcelona if he left the Spanish capital. England was off the table.
That stance has cracked.
Morata claims the situation now sits at roughly 55 per cent in favour of staying in Spain and 45 per cent towards a move to Arsenal. For a player who previously vetoed any destination that wasn’t Camp Nou, that is a dramatic swing.
Arsenal and Atletico locked in tense talks
The shift in Alvarez’s position has encouraged Arsenal to move, and they have done so aggressively. According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico’s director of football Mateu Alemany flew to London recently for face‑to‑face talks with the Premier League club.
Arsenal have already put serious money on the table: an opening bid of £103 million plus a further £4m in add‑ons. Atletico’s response has been blunt. They want around £129m.
The gap is obvious, and so is the tension. Publicly, Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has previously insisted the club would not even entertain offers of €150m or €200m for Alvarez. Yet behind the scenes, the stance is softer. The Spanish side are understood to be ready to negotiate, in part because they are eyeing Viktor Gyokeres as a potential replacement.
That ambition comes at a cost. Atletico’s valuation of Alvarez remains a major obstacle, and every hour that passes tightens the deadline noose for Arsenal.
Hostile mood in Madrid
The pressure is not only financial. It is emotional now.
Alvarez sat out Atletico’s opening La Liga fixture, a 2-0 home win over Malaga, and the reaction inside the stadium was ugly. Sections of the home support turned on the forward, with hostile chants reflecting a mood that has soured sharply as speculation over his future has intensified.
Diego Simeone tried to cool the temperature. Asked about Alvarez’s omission, the Atletico coach said: “We don't believe Julian Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow's game. Hopefully, over these next four days, he'll make further progress and we'll be closer to where we want him to be.”
On paper, that is a straightforward fitness explanation. In the current context, it has only fuelled the sense that something is about to give. When a club’s star forward is left out on the eve of a possible record sale, nobody believes it is just about conditioning.
Arsenal’s dilemma
From Arsenal’s side, the picture is brutally simple. The window is closing. They either go higher or they walk away.
Mikel Arteta wants an elite attacking addition, and Alvarez fits the profile: proven at the highest level, entering his prime, capable of transforming a frontline. But meeting Atletico’s asking price would push Arsenal into one of the biggest deals in their history, and they know Atletico are also under pressure, given their own plans for Gyokeres.
The next move belongs to Alvarez. He is expected to communicate his decision on whether he is willing to negotiate with Arsenal today. Only then can the clubs either accelerate talks or abandon them.
If he chooses to stay, Arsenal must pivot fast to alternative targets before the deadline slams shut. If he gives the green light to Arsenal, the saga turns into a straight fight over money.
One way or another, by the end of this window, Alvarez will have nailed his colours to a mast. The only question left is which crest he chooses to wear when the season truly starts to bite.
