Taylor Harwood-Bellis: Southampton's Best Centre-Back
Tonda Eckert has no doubts about Taylor Harwood-Bellis. Nor about where he stands in the English game.
The Southampton head coach believes the centre-back, wanted by Aston Villa, is “among the best centre-backs in the country” and insists the defender is handling the noise around his future with complete professionalism.
Harwood-Bellis, 24, joined Saints from Manchester City in 2023, initially on loan with an obligation to buy that was triggered, and has since forced his way into the England set-up, winning a cap in the Nations League against the Republic of Ireland in 2024.
Southampton have already shown how highly they value him. After batting away interest from Benfica, they turned down a Villa offer worth more than £18m this week. The south-coast club are understood to be holding out for around £25m for a player they paid £20m for two years ago.
Coach's Comments
Before Saturday’s Championship home game against Stoke, Eckert made his stance clear when speaking to BBC Radio Solent.
“We know how important Taylor is for us. I think he's been the best centre-back in the Championship last season,” he said. “It's completely normal that if you are among the best centre-backs in the country there is interest, and there has been.
"He's always dealt with it in a great way, very professional, but he's a Southampton player.
“In the end my job is to train the players. There are some decisions for the board and owners to take.”
The pressure around Harwood-Bellis is nothing new. Eckert pointed back to the final days of the January transfer window as proof he can shut out the speculation and perform.
“On 31 January, before we went to Stoke, there was heavy interest for him and he played one of the best games for us,” Eckert recalled.
That memory is why the coach has no hesitation starting him again against the same opponents, even as the transfer talk swirls and the bids creep upwards.
