Xavi Retains Ruud van Nistelrooy in Netherlands Coaching Staff as Backroom Team Forms
Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue his role on the Netherlands national team’s coaching staff under newly appointed head coach Xavi Hernandez. The former Dutch striker is expected to provide key continuity within the backroom setup alongside goalkeeping coach Patrick Lodewijks, as the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) finalizes preparations for a fresh chapter.
Continuity in Coaching Roles
Dutch news outlet Algemeen Dagblad reports that Van Nistelrooy’s work during the 2026 World Cup impressed the KNVB enough to keep him on board. Lodewijks, who has served as the goalkeeping coach since early 2023, will also remain in his post. These appointments form the domestic core supporting Xavi’s tactical vision for Oranje.
Xavi Embraces Dutch Football Heritage
“I find it an enormous honour to become the national coach of the Dutch team,” Xavi said in an official KNVB statement. “Educated at FC Barcelona and influenced by legends like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, I feel a special connection with Dutch football. You could say I am a bit of a son of Dutch football.”“Other great managers such as Louis van Gaal, who gave me my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard have shaped me as a player and coach. Winning is the ultimate goal, but I want to achieve it in a way that reflects those ideals and is enjoyable to watch. The foundation is solid and the potential is there.”
Xavi Begins New Era with Long-Term Commitment
At 46 years old, Xavi embarks on this new journey with the Netherlands, signing a contract that extends through 2030. His tenure covers major tournaments including Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. He replaces Ronald Koeman, who left following the team’s round-of-32 exit against Morocco at the recent World Cup.
Xavi is notable as the 21st foreign manager in Dutch national team history, the first since Ernst Happel managed from 1977 to 1978. His arrival marks a significant shift for Oranje, aiming to blend tradition with fresh ideas.
Upcoming Challenges: Germany and Beyond
Xavi’s first match in charge will be a high-profile UEFA Nations League clash against Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, September 24. This challenging opener will test his tactics and the squad’s adaptability. Following that, the Netherlands face Serbia and Greece in group fixtures, providing further opportunities to establish consistency under his leadership.
