Chelsea Reject Leeds United Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea have turned down an opening season‑long loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, with the London club making it clear the proposal came nowhere near their demands.

The rejection has not killed the deal. Talks are ongoing, and Mudryk is understood to be keen on a move to Elland Road as he searches for a way to relaunch a career that has stalled badly.

At 25, the Ukraine international has agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match fitness and rhythm. He spent 20 months out of the game after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium, a lay-off that ripped a hole through what was supposed to be his prime.

His suspension ended in July, and Chelsea have begun easing him back into action on their pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, using him mainly from the bench. Those minutes have been about rehabilitation, not headlines.

Mudryk has made it clear in recent conversations that he wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has pushed him towards Leeds, despite interest from Strasbourg – part of the same BlueCo ownership group as Chelsea – and clubs in Italy.

Leeds have surged to the front of the queue for one key reason: they are prepared to take Mudryk on loan without any option to buy. That suits Chelsea, who want his wages covered but are determined to keep control of a player they once saw as a long-term asset.

Leeds' Summer Activity

The Yorkshire club have already been busy this summer. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the attack, Tarik Muharemovic has come in from Sassuolo at centre-back, James Trafford has joined from Manchester City in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been signed from Borussia Monchengladbach to strengthen the defence.

They had also looked at Chelsea striker Liam Delap earlier in the window, but that interest has cooled, leaving Mudryk as the primary focus of their negotiations with the Blues.

Other Interested Clubs

Leeds are not alone in the chase. Brentford have maintained a long-standing interest in Mudryk, having tried to sign him months before Chelsea paid Shakhtar Donetsk an initial £61m in 2023. The Bees explored a loan this summer, but wanted an option to make the move permanent. Chelsea rejected that condition, and Brentford’s chances have faded as a result.

Coventry City have also registered their interest, while a switch to Strasbourg remains firmly on the table. Chelsea, for their part, are weighing up sending other players to the French club, with midfielder Dario Essugo among those being considered for a move.

For now, all roads appear to lead away from Stamford Bridge. The prospect of Mudryk staying put is viewed as unlikely inside the club, even if it has not been completely dismissed. The next offer on the table – and who makes it – may decide whether his restart comes amid the noise of Elland Road or somewhere very different.
