Arsenal Signs Ezri Konsa: First Defensive Move of the Summer

Arsenal have gone into the heart of a Premier League rival to make their first defensive signing of the summer, prising England international Ezri Konsa away from Aston Villa on a long-term contract.

The 28-year-old arrives in north London with serious mileage in his legs and reputation. Seven seasons at Villa Park. More than 200 appearances in all competitions. Week after week, he anchored a side that pushed from survival scraps into European contention, and rarely dipped below a solid seven out of ten.

His route to this point has never been glamorous, but it has been relentless. Konsa came through at Charlton Athletic, forcing his way into the first team in 2016. Within two seasons he had gone from promising academy product to one of the most coveted young defenders in the Football League, his composure on the ball and timing in the tackle standing out even in a struggling side.

Brentford moved first in 2018. One campaign in west London was enough. His performances across the 2018–19 season in the Championship pushed his value up and caught Premier League eyes. Aston Villa, rebuilding and ambitious after promotion, moved decisively in 2019 to bring him in.

From there, consistency became his calling card. At Villa he did not just survive the Premier League; he grew into one of its most reliable defenders. Comfortable at centre-back, capable at right-back, he offered managers tactical options without sacrificing stability. That blend of versatility and reliability is exactly what has now drawn Arsenal to him.

His rise has been mirrored on the international stage. Konsa represented England at Under-20 and Under-21 level before finally breaking into the senior setup in 2023. Once in, he stayed in. He has since become a regular for the Three Lions, featuring at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, experience that only hardens his profile as a ready-made, top-level defender.
