World Cup 2026 Semifinals Feature Soccer Giants: France, Spain, Argentina, England
After 100 matches, the 2026 World Cup has boiled down to its semifinal stage, featuring France, Spain, Argentina, and England. These four teams, all previous winners, remain separated by very little. The tight competition sets the stage for intense clashes as the tournament reaches its climax.
The tournament has been full of surprises, with teams like Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks inspiring fans, Mexico showcasing the legendary Azteca Stadium, and the U.S. team playing with energy before an unfortunate exit. Veterans such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić bid farewell, while traditional powerhouses Brazil, Germany, and Uruguay stumbled earlier than expected. Morocco repeated their strong 2022 performance, and other teams like Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Panama earned recognition.
Fans from the Netherlands, Norway, and Scotland brought their unique spirit to the stands, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. But now, only four giants remain. It’s the first time since 1990 that all semifinalists are former champions, and notably, these four top-ranked FIFA teams face off in the semifinals.
Semifinal Matchups Set
In Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET, France will take on Spain inside the climate-controlled AT&T Stadium. This marks France’s third straight semifinal appearance and fifth over nearly three decades. A day later, reigning champion Argentina meets England in Atlanta’s indoor stadium, with England eager to break a 60-year drought.
The winners will meet Sunday at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium for the final showdown.
"Everyone is a heavyweight," said Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente. "If we talk about the gap between teams, it’s even. It’s all very tight."
This year’s semifinals lack underdogs, contrasting with past tournaments where surprise teams like Morocco (2022) and Uruguay (2010) made deep runs. Both France and Spain were pre-tournament favorites, setting up a clash that many anticipated after last summer’s thrilling Nations League semifinal where Spain won 5-4. They also met in the Euro 2024 semifinal, another win for Spain.
French coach Didier Deschamps, who will retire after this World Cup following a 14-year tenure, commented, "We know this might be a spectacular game." He added that Spain remains the favorite based on their recent performances but smiled when mentioning he didn’t want to add pressure on de la Fuente, who guided Spain to a Euro title two years ago.
Since losing to Spain last year, France has gone 15 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss, dominating six World Cup matches with a 16-2 goal difference. Spain remains unbeaten in 36 matches over 28 months, conceding just one goal in the first five World Cup games before the quarterfinals.
France joins an elite group, becoming only the third team ever to reach three consecutive World Cup semifinals, alongside Germany and Brazil.
Spanish star Lamine Yamal, who turned 19 on Monday, said, "It will be a great game for the people in Spain and France." He clarified comments made after Belgium’s quarterfinal defeat, emphasizing that Spain fears no opponent.
France’s midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery echoed confidence, "We are the French national team. We are not afraid of anybody." The matchup features two of the world’s most popular talents: France’s Kylian Mbappé and Spain’s Lamine Yamal.
Deschamps acknowledged the challenge Yamal presents but noted, "We have many solutions." Zaire-Emery praised Yamal’s extraordinary skills but stressed soccer remains a team effort. De la Fuente hopes Yamal delivers his defining World Cup moment soon.
Mbappé is fully fit after a minor injury scare in the quarterfinal against Morocco. His record includes 12 knockout goals across three World Cups. This summer, his eight goals tie him with Argentina’s Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot lead.
Argentina and England Eye Final
The winner of France-Spain will enter the final as favorite, yet the trophy’s outcome remains open. Argentina aims to become the first repeat champion since Brazil in 1962. Their journey included tense matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland.
Messi reflected, "This group has gotten people used to doing things that aren’t normal. Staying at the top level, competing as world champions, and reaching another semifinal isn’t easy."
England demonstrated grit by coming back from deficits to defeat DR Congo, Mexico, and Norway, ending Erling Haaland’s run. Star striker Harry Kane told BBC Radio, "We want to get over the line. That is the missing piece now."
Before the final hurdle, the spotlight remains on the France-Spain clash and the duel between Mbappé and Yamal. On his birthday, Yamal spent time with his young half-brother, Keyne, whose reactions during Spanish matches have captivated social media.
Yamal said, "I’m relaxed for the game. Today I was with my brother getting a haircut. My gift would be a victory tomorrow and a chance to go to New York for the final."
