World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage: France, Argentina, Norway Join USA, Mexico, Germany in Round of 32

As Matchday 2 unfolds in the 2026 World Cup, the lineup for the knockout stage is becoming clearer. Two co-hosts, the United States and Mexico, have already secured first place in their groups, guaranteeing their spots in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Canada has earned four points from two games and will face Switzerland on Wednesday to decide the winner of Group B.

A total of 32 teams will progress beyond the group stage. This includes the top two from each group along with the eight best third-place finishers.

FIFA Tie-Breaking Rules

FIFA uses a multi-step process to break ties within groups:

  • Step 1: Points earned in matches between tied teams, goal difference among those matches, then goals scored.
  • Step 2: If still tied, overall goal difference in all group matches, total goals scored, then team conduct score based on cards received.
  • Step 3: If no decision, rankings from the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking are used.

Teams Secured for Round of 32

  • United States
  • Mexico
  • Germany
  • Argentina
  • France
  • Norway

The U.S. topped Group D after wins over Paraguay and Australia, locking in a July 1 knockout match at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara against a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J.

Mexico won Group A by keeping clean sheets against South Africa and South Korea. They will play on June 30 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, facing a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I.

Germany secured Group E following back-to-back victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast. Their final group game saw Ecuador and Curaçao draw, confirming Germany's top spot. They'll take on a third-place team from Groups A, B, C, D, or F on June 29 in Boston.

Argentina guaranteed progression with a win over Austria and will close Group J against Jordan before meeting the Group H runner-up in Miami on July 3. Algeria’s win over Jordan confirmed them as Group J leaders.

France and Norway both qualified from Group I after victories on Monday. Their upcoming clash in Boston will decide who tops the group, which affects seeding and potentially an easier path in the knockout rounds.

Teams Exiting the Tournament

  • Haiti
  • Türkiye
  • Tunisia
  • Jordan

Haiti, returning to the World Cup since 1974, remains winless after losses to Scotland and Brazil. They face Morocco in their final match.

Türkiye, once considered a contender in Group D, bowed out following defeats by Australia and Paraguay. After finishing third in 2002, this exit cuts short their campaign. They will play the U.S. in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Tunisia suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden, leading to the firing of their manager. The new coach, Hervé Renard, faced a tough start with a 4-0 loss to Japan, eliminating Tunisia.

Jordan began with a loss to Austria and needed a result versus Algeria to advance but fell short. Algeria secured all three points, knocking Jordan out ahead of their last group match against defending champions Argentina.

New Knockout Bracket Format

This World Cup introduces a revised knockout bracket to balance competition. It splits the top teams into two paths, ensuring the highest-ranked contenders don't meet before the final if they win their groups. For instance, top-ranked Spain and defending champions Argentina are placed in opposite sides. Similarly, France and England occupy separate brackets. That means the top four teams won't clash until the semifinals, assuming they advance.
