Noureddine Amrabat Returns to Europe with Utrecht
Noureddine Amrabat is back in Europe. Back where his career first caught fire.
The 39-year-old Moroccan has signed for Dutch side Utrecht as a free agent after a single season with Wydad in Casablanca, returning to the country where he made his name.
His departure from Wydad came in the middle of a cost-cutting drive. New president Brahim El Asri pushed through a strict austerity policy, refusing to renew a raft of contracts as the club wrestled with a financial crisis that even disrupted salary payments late last season. Amrabat, despite his stature, was among those allowed to walk away.
He did not leave empty-handed. In 38 appearances for Wydad, the veteran forward produced 4 goals and 4 assists, adding a layer of nous and personality to a side battling turbulence off the pitch.
Now Utrecht have moved quickly. The Eredivisie club confirmed on Tuesday, via a statement on their website, that Amrabat has joined after a short trial. Two weeks on the training pitch were enough. His fitness, sharpness and experience convinced the coaching staff, and he has been cleared to play in official matches.
There was a family touch to the deal as well. His brother, Sofyan Amrabat – who once came through Utrecht’s youth system – stepped in behind the scenes, speaking with club officials and helping to arrange the trial that opened the door.
For Utrecht, it is a low-risk move with a potentially high upside. Amrabat brings a wealth of experience from a career that began in the Netherlands with Ajax, Huizen and PSV, and has since taken in some of Europe’s top leagues. He offers versatility across the attacking line and a hardened competitive edge, traits that can steady a young dressing room and tilt tight games.
The timing is no coincidence. Utrecht are preparing for their fifth-round league fixture against GA Eagles on Saturday. With paperwork completed and the green light granted, the question now is simple: how quickly will Noureddine Amrabat’s second Dutch chapter truly begin?
