World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage: How the Expanded 32-Team Bracket Will Operate

The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the largest in history, featuring a knockout stage unlike any before it. With 48 teams competing, the tournament introduces a Round of 32 where twice as many teams advance past the group phase compared to previous editions.

Who Advances to the Knockout Rounds?

A total of 32 teams qualify for the knockout stage: the top two from each of the 12 groups, plus the eight best third-placed teams across all groups. This means 16 teams will be eliminated after the group matches.

As of June 23, six countries have secured their spots in the Round of 32:

  • Mexico (Group A) – topped their group first
  • United States (Group D) – defeated Australia
  • Germany (Group E) – returning after early exits in 2018 and 2022
  • France (Group I) – 2018 champions progressing smoothly
  • Argentina (Group J) – current champions led by Lionel Messi
  • Norway (Group I) – back in the tournament after 28 years

The final lineup will be set when the group stage ends on June 27, particularly deciding which third-placed teams advance.

How Is the Knockout Bracket Set Up?

The bracket is fixed ahead of the knockout rounds; there’s no reshuffling based on results. Teams’ positions after the group stage determine their place in the Round of 32, following a structure established by FIFA before the tournament starts.

The initial draw took place in December 2025, dividing the 48 teams into four pots of 12 based on FIFA rankings. The hosts (Mexico, Canada, and the United States) were seeded at the top of their groups. Pot 1 contained the highest-ranked teams to ensure top sides were spread out.

Each group winner, runner-up, and qualifying third-place team is assigned a specific knockout match slot. Group winners receive an easier theoretical path as a reward. The eight best third-placed teams are matched against group winners according to a pre-published FIFA table. No second draw or reseeding happens after the group stage.

Knockout Phase Structure

The knockout rounds are single-elimination matches: win to move on, lose and you're out. Ties after 90 minutes lead to 30 minutes of extra time, then penalties if needed.

The five knockout rounds include:

  • Round of 32: 32 teams play 16 matches – new to this World Cup
  • Round of 16: 16 teams, 8 matches
  • Quarter-finals: 8 teams, 4 matches
  • Semi-finals: 4 teams, 2 matches
  • Final and third-place play-off: Winners of semis compete for the title; losers play for third place

This totals 32 knockout games, part of a 104-match event—40 more than the 2022 tournament.

The final will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, kicking off at 3:00 PM ET. It marks the climax of a tournament spanning 16 stadiums across three countries. For the first time ever, the World Cup final will feature a live half-time show.
