Tuchel Allows World Cup Medicals for Transfers

Thomas Tuchel has drawn a clear line in the sand for England’s World Cup camp – but he’s left just enough room for the transfer market to squeeze through.

The England manager has confirmed he will allow players to undergo medicals for club moves during the tournament, provided they do not clash with preparation for matches.

“If anyone has chance to complete a transfer, we’ll not stand in the way, but it has to align with our schedule and goals which is to be focused and prepare for matches,” Tuchel said, speaking before England’s opening game. “The last day before the match and the second last day, not. Until now, no player approached me. The doctor is ready to take any medical if needed! We’re always happy to help have clarity around the player.”

No grey area there. England’s training rhythm comes first. But if a deal is close and the timing is right, the national team will not be the obstacle.

City watching closely as Anderson saga unfolds

That stance lands at a crucial moment for Manchester City, who are already deep into reshaping their squad after the departure of club captain Bernardo Silva.

Elliot Anderson has emerged as City’s leading target for the summer window. Nottingham Forest have already knocked back an opening bid and value the 23-year-old at around £100 million. City, unwilling to be dragged into a drawn-out stalemate, have begun to examine alternatives, with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali under consideration.

The Anderson situation is finely poised. He is tied to a long-term contract at the City Ground, Forest are in a strong bargaining position, and Manchester United have also registered their interest. Even so, there is an understanding that Anderson’s preference leans towards a move to the Etihad Stadium.

Whether City return with an improved offer remains the key question. The club’s hierarchy, led by director of football Hugo Viana, must now decide how far they are prepared to go for a player they see as central to their post-Bernardo rebuild.

Tuchel’s flexibility, City’s opportunity

Tuchel’s approach could be a quiet advantage for City in the coming weeks. With Enzo Maresca’s appointment imminent and a significant recruitment drive already in motion, the ability for England players to complete medicals without leaving camp for days at a time is not a small detail. It is a logistical gift.

If Anderson’s situation accelerates during the World Cup, England’s medical staff stand ready. That means City, or any other suitor, can push a deal over the line without dragging the player out of his international bubble or forcing an awkward club-versus-country standoff.

For now, no England player has gone to Tuchel asking for that green light. But the framework is there. The doctor is on standby. The World Cup will roll on, and the transfer market will hum in the background.

Across the Premier League, recruitment teams will have taken note. In a summer where the World Cup and the transfer window collide, Tuchel has made one thing clear: England will prepare to win – and if a career-defining move needs a medical in the middle of it all, he won’t be the one to say no.
