Hansi Flick's Bold Barcelona Lineup for Season Opener
Hansi Flick wasted no time putting his stamp on Barcelona’s new season.
For the opener against Elche CF, the German coach named a starting XI that underlined both his ruthlessness and his appetite for risk, with several big calls before a ball had even been kicked.
Bold omissions, bolder promotion
Alejandro Balde, Marc Casado and Hector Fort were all left out of the initial squad list, decisions that had already raised eyebrows. Flick has not come in to simply maintain the status quo.
His first league lineup drives that point home.
Xavi Espart, tipped hours before kick-off to feature, has indeed been handed a start. The youngster lines up at left-back, a statement of trust on day one. New signing Joao Cancelo, one of the marquee arrivals of the summer, must wait his turn on the bench.
On the opposite flank, Eric Garcia is deployed at right-back, with Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin forming the central defensive pairing. It is a back line that mixes experience, adaptation and a clear message: places will be earned, not guaranteed.
Bernal at the heart, Gavi and Fermin unleashed
The surprises continue in midfield. Marc Bernal is given a starting role, tasked with anchoring and organising the game’s rhythm. For a season opener at Barcelona, that is no small responsibility.
Either side of him, Gavi and Fermin Lopez bring energy and attacking intent. With Bernal expected to moderate the tempo and offer balance, Gavi and Fermin have license to break lines, press high and support the forwards. It is an aggressive midfield on paper, designed to dominate rather than simply control.
Adeyemi through the middle, Yamal and Raphinha wide
Up front, Flick has opted for a modern twist. New signing Karim Adeyemi starts as a false nine, a role that should exploit his movement between the lines and his pace attacking space.
Raphinha and Lamine Yamal flank him, offering width, creativity and direct threat from the wings. The shape suggests fluid interchanging of positions, with Adeyemi dropping off, Yamal cutting inside and Raphinha driving at his full-back. If it clicks, Elche’s defence will be dragged into uncomfortable areas all evening.
Firepower waiting in reserve
The bench is just as intriguing.
Anthony Gordon, another high-profile new arrival, is available for the second half and gives Flick a completely different type of attacking option: relentless running, one-on-one threat and intensity from the left.
Cancelo, Pedri and Jules Kounde are also among the substitutes, underlining the depth at Flick’s disposal. Any of the three can change the feel of the game the moment they step on.
One more name lingers in the background: Hamza Abdelkarim. The forward has generated plenty of buzz and is seen as a genuine option in the number nine role. Whether Flick chooses to unleash him on opening night will say plenty about how quickly he is prepared to accelerate this rebuild.
