Thomas Tuchel Considering Max Dowman Call-Up Amid England Injury Crisis
Thomas Tuchel is seriously considering fast-tracking Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman into England’s senior set-up as a growing injury crisis cuts into his Nations League plans.
The 16-year-old, already training with England’s Under-19s at St George’s Park, is on a shortlist of youngsters who could be drafted into the senior camp ahead of a demanding run of four fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.
He would barely need to move pitches to make the jump. The opportunity has opened up after a flurry of withdrawals ripped through Tuchel’s original squad.
Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of the upcoming international window because of fitness concerns, forcing the England head coach into an early reshuffle.
Dowman’s rapid rise
Dowman is scheduled to play for the Under-19s against the Republic of Ireland on Friday, September 25. That plan still stands, but Tuchel is exploring whether to bring him across to train with Harry Kane and the senior group during the break.
For Dowman, it would be another sharp step on a steep upward climb.
The Arsenal midfielder exploded into the national conversation in March when he scored against Everton at the Emirates Stadium, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days. One clean strike, and the record books changed.
He has not faded since. Earlier this month he hit a brace in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town, underlining why he is viewed inside the club as one of English football’s standout teenage talents.
He did not make England’s 2026 World Cup squad, but his form at club level has pushed him closer to Tuchel’s long-term thinking. There has been talk of a loan move to secure more minutes this season, yet The Sporting News understands Arsenal are more likely to keep him in-house for now.
A spell with the seniors, even just in training, would only strengthen his case.
Tuchel’s selection headache
Tuchel’s preparations for the new Nations League campaign have been complicated by the loss of several key names.
Rice, the heartbeat of Arsenal’s midfield and a central figure for England, has stepped away amid concerns over his workload and fitness. Palmer, who had only just forced his way back into the England picture after missing the World Cup, is sidelined by a minor injury.
From Manchester United, both Rashford and Mainoo have withdrawn with injury issues of their own. Newcastle defender Livramento completes a list of five absentees that has forced England’s staff back to the drawing board.
The Football Association moved quickly, confirming on Monday that Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White have been drafted in as replacements.
Those additions give Tuchel more established cover. Dowman, though, would represent something different: a look at the next wave.
Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha was already included in the original senior squad named on September 18, a clear sign that Tuchel is prepared to reward emerging talent if he believes it can handle the stage.
If Dowman joins him, England’s training pitches at St George’s Park will start to look like a glimpse of Euro 2028 and beyond.
Spain first, then a demanding run
England open their 2026-27 Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, a heavyweight test to launch Tuchel’s tenure in the competition.
From there, the schedule bites hard.
Tuchel’s side travel to Prague to face Czechia on September 29, then head to Rijeka to meet Croatia on October 3. The international window closes with a return fixture against Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6.
By then, the picture around Dowman will be clearer. Will he still be just the record-breaking kid lighting up cup ties for Arsenal, or the teenager who walked into an England camp and convinced a new head coach he belongs on that stage?
