Simeone Reintegrates Alvarez Amid Transfer Tension

Diego Simeone is bringing Julian Alvarez back into the Atletico Madrid squad – and straight into the eye of the storm.

The Argentine forward, who pushed to leave the club in the summer with Barcelona and Real Madrid both submitting bids, will be named in the squad for Sunday’s La Liga clash with Villarreal. Atletico refused to sell, held their line, and now Simeone is moving to reintegrate a player who has become a lightning rod for fan frustration.

“Yes, he's going to be included in the squad list tomorrow and he's doing better,” Simeone told reporters on Saturday. Alvarez missed Atletico’s opening league win over Malaga on Wednesday, still short of full fitness after his post-World Cup holiday. “Obviously, he's still getting up to speed, like all his teammates.”

The physical gap is closing. The emotional one is the problem.

Fans Ready to Voice Their Anger

Sections of the Atletico support turned on Alvarez during the Malaga game, directing insulting chants at the striker over his desire to leave. The expectation inside the club is that the jeers will return when Villarreal visit.

Simeone has already made it clear he will not tell the stands how to feel. He insists the supporters must be respected. But he has drawn his own line on Alvarez.

“Obviously I don't share in any insults or slights. Let that be absolutely clear,” he said, firm and unapologetic. For the coach, the equation is simple: Atletico have ambitions, and Alvarez remains central to them.

“Julian is a hugely important player for achieving the goals we have as a team. We need him, we're going to look after him,” Simeone continued. “That's from a sporting standpoint, and we're going to stand by him. Why? Because he's our player, and as long as there are players at Atletico Madrid who are mine, I'm going to look after them.”

The message is unmistakable. The club may have stared down Barcelona and Real Madrid in the market, but Simeone now has to manage something trickier: a reconciliation between a restless star and a demanding fanbase, all while trying to keep Atletico’s season on track.

Barcelona Go Quiet on Alvarez Chase

On the other side of the saga, Barcelona have gone into public silence.

Coach Hansi Flick, repeatedly pressed on Saturday about whether the Spanish champions had ended their pursuit of Alvarez, refused to be drawn into the conversation. He simply would not talk about players from other clubs.

So the next move belongs to Alvarez – and to the stands at the Metropolitano. Will they forgive, or will every touch on Sunday remind him how close he came to walking away?
