Hull City vs Manchester United: Premier League Kick-Off Preview
The Premier League’s first 12.30pm BST kick-off of the season brings a sharp jolt of reality for newly promoted Hull City: Manchester United at the MKM Stadium, cameras on, no hiding place.
Sergej Jakirovic has stayed loyal to the group that dragged Hull up. Eight of today’s starting XI made the climb with him from the Championship, a clear message that this is their stage to keep, not just borrow.
Hull’s summer business has been busy, but the starting line-up barely shows it. Only three of their double-figure signings make full competitive debuts: goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, defender Nobel Mendy and Elliot Stroud. Mendy replaces fellow new arrival Jens Hjerto-Dahl in the only change from Hull’s final pre-season friendly.
That switch hints at something more significant. Jakirovic appears to be rolling out a wing-back system, a shape he used in bursts during the 2025/26 Championship campaign but kept under wraps in pre-season. It’s a bold call against United, but also a familiar one for this squad.
Fantasy Premier League managers will be watching Hull’s midfield closely. Budget £4.5m options Charlie Slater and Matt Crooks both start in the engine room, tasked with giving Hull a foothold against United’s more illustrious names. At the back, the value theme continues: five £4.0m defenders feature in the matchday squad, including debutant Mendy.
On the United side, the headline is an absence. Amad Diallo doesn’t make the squad, with the winger carrying what BBC reporter Simon Stone describes as a “niggle”. His omission forces an early reshuffle in Erik ten Hag’s attacking plans.
The door swings open for Bryan Mbeumo. Benched in the defeat to AC Milan in United’s final friendly, he comes straight into the starting XI to fill Amad’s spot. That change also helps Matheus Cunha keep his place in the side, giving United a flexible, mobile front line behind the central striker.
United’s bench carries its own stories. Benjamin Sesko and Karl Darlow are both involved despite missing the entire pre-season programme, a sign of how quickly they are being asked to slot into competitive action. And then there’s Marcus Rashford. The forward is named among the substitutes for the first time in a competitive United squad since December 2024, a notable step in his attempt to re-establish himself.
Team Line-ups
Hull City XI: Tzolakis, Mendy, Egan, Ajayi, Coyle, Crooks, Slater, Giles, Stroud, Belloumi, McBurnie.
Subs: Phillips, Millar, Hjerto-Dahl, McNair, Drameh, Herrington, Targett, Dowell, Gourna-Douath.

For Hull, this is a test of whether Championship chemistry can stand up to Premier League firepower. For United, it’s a chance to set the tone, to show that depth, returning names and new faces can finally knit into a side that starts fast rather than plays catch-up.
