Rodri Negotiates New Deal with Manchester City Amid Real Madrid Interest

Manchester City believe they are closing in on the decision that will define their midfield for years. Rodri, the metronome of their modern era, is weighing what has been described in Spain as a “weighty” contract offer, and the gap between club and player is shrinking.

For now, though, everything is on hold.

The Spain international has entered the final year of his current deal and has been crystal clear: nothing will be signed, nothing will be decided, until after the FIFA World Cup. His focus, he insists, is on the tournament across the Atlantic, not on the numbers on a contract.

City can live with the wait. What they could not live with was the financial distance that had opened up in earlier talks.

Fabrizio Romano previously revealed that the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner wanted a significantly improved package, identifying a financial gap as the main stumbling block. City viewed him as irreplaceable; his camp wanted a contract that reflected exactly that.

So the club moved.

According to Marca journalist Matteo Moretto, City and Rodri are now “not far” from an agreement. The Premier League champions have put a serious, upgraded proposal on the table, one substantial enough to drag negotiations back within reach of a deal. Rodri is taking his time to digest it.

The timing is delicate. Pep Guardiola has gone, with City preparing to confirm Enzo Maresca as their new manager once the World Cup dust settles. In the middle of that upheaval sits the most important outfield player of the Guardiola era, contemplating whether to tie his prime years to a new project.

And watching all of this, from Madrid, is Real.

Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme recently tried to seize the narrative, claiming that an agreement with Rodri was already in place at the Santiago Bernabéu. The midfielder shut that down quickly and publicly, stating that any decision on his future “will have to wait until after the World Cup”.

That denial mattered. It did not kill the interest from Spain’s capital, but it underlined that no one has his word yet.

Inside the Etihad, Moretto’s update will land well. Director of football Hugo Viana has made Rodri’s renewal one of the defining tasks of his summer. Letting a 29-year-old of this stature drift into the final 12 months of his contract would open the door wide for Madrid or any other heavyweight looking for a ready-made anchor.

City’s response has been to remove excuses. The improved offer does exactly that: it shows they are prepared to pay like a club that truly believes he cannot be replaced.

Now the power sits with the player.

Rodri will finish his World Cup, take stock with his family, and then choose between the empire he has helped build in Manchester and the possibility of a new chapter, with Madrid or elsewhere. City have played their hand with money and patience.

Soon enough, everyone will find out if that is enough to keep the heartbeat of their midfield where they believe he belongs.
