Rodri Injury Impacts Manchester City's FA Cup and Premier League Aspirations

The scans are back, and they have not brought the clarity Manchester City wanted. Rodri has undergone medical tests on a groin problem this week, and while the team heads to Burnley, the real anxiety sits a few days further down the road: the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton.

Pep Guardiola does not expect to see his midfield anchor at Turf Moor. "I think for tomorrow he will not be ready," he said in his pre-match press conference, before leaving the door just ajar for what comes next. "We’ll see for next games the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton or 12 days later for the Premier League game at Everton."

So the clock is ticking. City are entering the decisive stretch of their season, but their metronome is again fighting the calendar. The club do at least have a sizeable gap in their league schedule after the cup tie, a pause that could prove crucial in Rodri’s bid to return for the final push.

Until then, Guardiola has to improvise.

Nico Gonzalez steps into the storm

With Rodri sidelined for the immediate future, the responsibility of holding City’s midfield together is set to fall on Nico Gonzalez. It is not a new assignment. He has already stepped into the role during earlier spells of Rodri’s absence this season, and Guardiola has not forgotten.

"Nico Gonzalez helped us a lot in the absence of Rodri to be where we are now," the City manager said, a pointed reminder that this squad has already had to bend without breaking.

Gonzalez will again be asked to screen the defence, dictate tempo and keep City’s structure intact as they try to stay on top of the Premier League and punch their ticket to another FA Cup final. It is a big ask, but this is exactly why Guardiola demands depth and versatility from his squad.

A season of setbacks for Rodri

For Rodri himself, this latest issue is another jarring interruption in a complicated campaign. He missed a large chunk of the first half of the season with a hamstring injury, only to spend months working his way back to full sharpness after the ACL problem that wrecked last year.

Just as he had finally returned to something close to his best, the groin goes. Another rehab. Another race against time. Another key stretch of the season where City must learn to live without the man who knits their play together.

The Spaniard’s absence doesn’t just remove a defensive shield. It changes how City build from the back, how they press, how they control games when the tempo rises and the margins shrink.

Defensive worries pile up

As if that was not enough, the problems are not confined to midfield. Ruben Dias has also been ruled out of the Burnley trip as he continues to recover from an ankle injury. One of Guardiola’s defensive pillars is unavailable, forcing another reshuffle at the back.

So City travel to Burnley without their first-choice holding midfielder and one of their defensive leaders, juggling selection at both ends of the pitch while trying to reclaim top spot in the league.

Guardiola has always preached adaptability. Now his squad has to live it. With a semi-final looming and the title race tightening, the question is simple: how long can City keep dictating the story without the man who usually controls the script?
