Nkunku's Future: Newcastle's Bid vs Leipzig's Pull

Christopher Nkunku stands at a crossroads again, barely a year after his big move to Italy. The offers are on the table. The money is serious. The dilemma is clear.

According to reports in Italy, Newcastle United have put forward the most attractive proposal to Milan for the French forward. On the numbers and structure of the deal, the Premier League club are leading the race. But Nkunku’s heart, it seems, is pulling him back to familiar ground: RB Leipzig.

Frozen Out at Milan

The situation at Milan is brutal in its simplicity. Ruben Amorim does not see Nkunku as part of his project. The former Chelsea attacker has been cut out of the squad, left without even a shirt number for the new season. For a player who arrived only last year for €37m plus add-ons, it is a rapid and ruthless fall down the pecking order.

On the pitch, his return has not been disastrous. Eight goals and three assists in 35 competitive appearances is respectable, if not spectacular. But Milan are reshaping, and Nkunku has become collateral in that shift. He is on the market, and everyone knows it.

Newcastle Push Hard

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that both Newcastle United and RB Leipzig are in direct talks with Milan. Neither negotiation is said to be at an advanced stage yet, but the outlines are clear enough.

Newcastle, backed by Premier League money and ambition, are ready to go to around €30m for the France international. Italian outlet Calciomercato and Milan reporter Daniele Longo add that the English club’s terms are currently the most favourable for Milan. From a purely financial standpoint, the Serie A side would have little hesitation.

For Newcastle, Nkunku would be a statement signing: a versatile forward with European pedigree, capable of playing across the front line and between the lines. They see opportunity where Milan see surplus.

Leipzig, the Comfort Zone

The complication comes from the player himself. Nkunku’s preference, according to the same reports, is a return to RB Leipzig, the club where his career truly ignited.

His numbers in Germany tell the story. Between 2019 and 2023, he scored 70 goals and delivered 56 assists in 172 games. In Leipzig colours, he was one of Europe’s most devastating attacking midfielders, a constant threat, a player opponents had to game-plan for.

That period remains the high point of his career. It is no surprise he views a return as the best path to relaunch himself, especially after a turbulent few years.

From Chelsea Struggles to Milan Uncertainty

Nkunku’s trajectory shifted with the €60m transfer to Chelsea in the summer of 2023. The move was supposed to be the leap into the elite. Instead, his form dipped and never fully recovered. By the time he landed at Milan, he was already in the process of rebuilding his reputation.

Now, even that reset has stalled. Excluded from Amorim’s plans and effectively sidelined before a ball is kicked, he is again searching for the right environment and the right manager to unlock the version of himself that lit up the Bundesliga.

Money vs. Memory

So the battle lines are drawn. Newcastle offer the strongest deal to Milan. Leipzig offer the comfort of a system and a league where Nkunku once thrived.

Milan must decide whether to prioritise the best bid or work with the player’s preference. Nkunku must weigh the pull of a familiar stage against the challenge and exposure of the Premier League.

One club wants to cash in. One club wants him back. One club wants to build around him.
