Mourinho Targets Mateus Fernandes from Relegated West Ham
José Mourinho has not even taken charge of a game at Real Madrid, yet the outline of his new midfield is already taking shape. At the centre of it, he hopes, is a 21-year-old who could not keep West Ham United in the Premier League but did more than enough to escape with his own reputation enhanced: Mateus Fernandes.
The young midfielder is emerging from a bruising season with numbers that cut through the gloom at the London Stadium. Three goals, four assists, 36 Premier League appearances. Across a campaign where West Ham slid out of the division and into a looming year in the Championship, Fernandes kept showing for the ball, kept trying to drag games back towards his side.
Relegation changes everything. For the club, it means a reset. For a player of Fernandes’ profile, it opens a door.
Mourinho is trying to walk straight through it.
According to Diario AS, the incoming Real Madrid head coach has already presented the hierarchy with a list of targets to remodel the engine room at the Bernabéu, and Fernandes’ name is on it. The report is blunt: Mourinho wants him, and Madrid have begun exploring how to make it happen.
This is classic Mourinho territory. Identify a young, hungry midfielder, tested by adversity rather than sheltered by a dominant side, and drop him into a dressing room where pressure is constant and excuses are scarce. Fernandes, still only 21, fits that profile. He has already carried responsibility in a struggling team; now he is being lined up for a very different kind of weight.
Madrid, though, are not alone at the table.
Arsenal and Liverpool have also been credited with serious interest in the West Ham standout, turning his situation into one of the early transfer battles of the summer. Both clubs are looking to refresh their midfield options, both are drawn to the blend of energy and end product Fernandes showed in a difficult environment.
West Ham’s relegation means the clock is ticking. A season in the Championship is on the horizon, but for Mateus Fernandes, the next step is far more likely to be decided in boardrooms in Madrid, London and Liverpool than in second-tier stadiums across England.
If Mourinho gets his way, the midfielder who could not quite save West Ham will be asked to help drive Real Madrid instead.
