Alejandro Balde's Uncertain Future at Barcelona
Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is sliding into dangerous territory, and everyone can feel it.
Left out of Hansi Flick’s squad for the opening game against Elche, the 20-year-old watched from the outside as Barça began their season without him. For a player once billed as the club’s next great full-back, that omission spoke louder than any official statement.
A talent on the margins
Balde has slipped down the pecking order under Flick. The new coach has turned to Joao Cancelo as his first-choice option on the left, with Gerard Romero viewed as short-term cover. Balde, once a symbol of Barça’s fresh, energetic flank play, now finds himself on the fringes.
His last campaign didn’t help his cause. Form wavered, performances dipped, and injuries repeatedly broke his rhythm. The electric bursts down the left were still there in flashes, but not often enough to convince a new manager looking for reliability from day one. Pre-season offered Balde a chance to reset; instead, it underlined Flick’s doubts.
Feeling pushed towards the exit
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Balde feels the club are edging him towards the door. The message from inside the camp is that Barcelona are actively trying to resolve his future, and the player senses the pressure.
From Balde’s side, the stance is very different. He is happy at Barcelona. He wants to stay. He wants to fight for his place and prove he belongs in Flick’s plans. For now, that desire isn’t being matched by the coach’s trust.
The tension is clear: a club that seems ready to move on, and a player who believes his story at Camp Nou shouldn’t be over yet.
Europe starts circling
That uncertainty has drawn attention from across Europe. Aston Villa and SL Benfica have already been linked, testing the waters as the situation deteriorates. More recently, Manchester United have joined the chase and are keeping a particularly close eye on developments.
United are in the market for a new left-back and see Balde as an ideal fit: young, quick, technically sharp, and with room to grow. His age profile and ceiling make him a rare opportunity in a market where top full-backs are hard to find.
If Barcelona open the door, there will be no shortage of clubs ready to walk through it.
Barcelona’s price – and the clock
For all the noise, Barça are not prepared to let Balde go on the cheap. The club value him at around €40 million at minimum, a figure that reflects both his potential and his status as a homegrown asset.
That valuation sets the stage for the next few weeks. Either a club steps up and meets Barcelona’s demands, or Flick is left with a talented, unsettled full-back on the outside looking in.
Balde wants to stay and fight. Barcelona appear to be steering him towards a different path. One of them will have to give before the window slams shut.
