Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Return Could Impact Chicago Fire's Playoff Ambitions

Mbekezeli Mbokazi could yet have a say in Chicago Fire’s season, with the defender now targeting a return in time for the MLS Cup Playoffs after fears his year was over.

The centre-back tore his thigh in late July, an injury initially described as season-ending for one of Chicago’s standout performers. His absence ripped a hole in a defence he had anchored with authority, just months after shining on the biggest stage with Bafana at the World Cup.

Back then, the outlook was bleak. Now, the tone has changed.

Speaking after Fire’s 1-1 draw away to New York Red Bulls, coach Gregg Berhalter rowed back on his earlier assessment of the injury.

“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter admitted. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”

That possibility will be music to Chicago ears. Before the tear, Mbokazi had been a rock at the back, earning rave reviews and a place in the MLS All Star game. His composure and timing had turned him into one of the league’s most talked-about young defenders.

His form carried over to the World Cup, where he played a starring role for Bafana and helped them reach the knockout phase for the first time in their history. On that stage, he wasn’t just solid; he was a breakout name, one of the tournament’s emerging talents.

Chicago now hope to tap back into that momentum just as the stakes rise in late November. A fit Mbokazi for the playoffs changes the feel of their back line and the ambition of their campaign.

For Bafana, though, the news cuts the other way. The revised timeline still leaves him unlikely to feature in their crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15, fixtures that fall just days before he is expected to be ready to rejoin Chicago’s matchday squad.

Club or country. Playoffs or qualifiers. As his rehab gathers pace, Mbokazi’s next appearance could shape more than one season.
