Mary Earps Joins London City: A Bold Move for Ambition

Mary Earps has never been shy about standards. Or ambition. So when she talks about a club “putting a marker down” and “really going for it,” you get the sense this isn’t a routine move at the back end of a glittering career. It’s a statement.

The former international standout has committed to London City, and she sounds as energised as a rookie walking into her first professional dressing room.

“I’m over the moon to join this club and I’m really looking forward to it,” Earps said. “I feel the club aligns with what I stand for. I can’t wait to get started and to get down to business.”

This is not just about a change of shirt. Earps has been drawn in by what sits behind the badge: the long-term project, the structure, and a domestic vision that matches her own appetite to compete and to influence the game’s direction.

“The club’s values represent what I want to represent and they are passionate about what I want to achieve and change the game in a positive way,” she explained. Every conversation, she said, pulled her further in. “All the conversations have been really positive and every time I spoke with the club I wanted to hear more.”

The hook is clear. London City are building something, and they want to do it quickly. A new training facility, heavy investment, and an ownership group fronted by Michele Kang that is unapologetic about its targets.

“The vision and ambition, including the new training facility, is incredible and I’m looking forward to seeing that develop,” Earps said. “It shows what our owner Michele and everyone at the club want to do in terms of really going for it. It’s about putting a marker down and saying we want to be competitive in a short space of time.”

That urgency suits her. Earps has made a career out of demanding more from herself and those around her, and she made it clear that nothing about this move signals a soft landing. She remains obsessed with maintaining her own elite level in a league that punishes any drop-off.

She also pointed straight at the dressing room she is walking into, and in particular the goalkeeping department led by Elene Lete, as a key part of the attraction.

“I’m looking forward to working alongside Elene and the goalkeeping unit,” she said. “Elene made some great saves and interventions last season. Hopefully we can bounce off each other and work hard and enjoy it.”

This is how top keepers talk: competition, detail, marginal gains. Earps wants to push and be pushed, to stretch her technical limits in an environment that has already proved it can compete. London City’s mid-table finish in their debut WSL campaign in 2025-26 turned heads; now the challenge is to prove it was a launchpad, not a one-off.

Her focus isn’t only internal. Earps has always understood the bond between a team and its support, and she wasted no time addressing the stands she will soon be playing in front of.

“My message to the fans is that I’m really excited to get started and make some memories together, I can’t wait to play in front of you all,” she said. She talked about immersing herself in the club’s identity as much as its tactics. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the players, the staff, the style of play and club culture and trying to give everything I can to help the club achieve its collective goals and be as successful as possible.”

The competitive edge remains sharp. Earps is adamant this move is about what she still has to offer at the highest level, not what she has already done.

“I feel I still have so much left to give to the game, and that's exactly why I chose London City,” she said. “It won’t be easy, the WSL is extremely competitive. The team had a brilliant 2025-26 season finishing mid-table in their first season, now it’s about climbing the table and working towards finishing as high as possible.”

That is the challenge laid out: a club with fresh infrastructure, a bold owner, a promising squad, and now a goalkeeper whose career has been built on refusing to settle. London City have talked about accelerating their rise. With Earps between the posts, they have signed a player who will demand it.
