Manchester United Target Crysencio Summerville as Left Flank Solution

Manchester United have turned their attention to Crysencio Summerville, with the West Ham United winger emerging as a serious candidate to reshape their left flank this summer.

This is not a vague enquiry. Two separate reports describe United’s interest as concrete, and crucially, Liverpool are no longer in the race.

United circle as West Ham prepare to cash in

Summerville’s numbers last season were solid rather than spectacular: seven goals and five assists in 34 appearances for West Ham. In a relegated side, though, those figures carry a different weight. West Ham’s drop into the Championship has made his departure from the London Stadium feel inevitable.

The 24-year-old is one of the club’s most sellable assets, and West Ham have set their stall out. They want around £50 million. In today’s market, that is not a bargain, but it is a long way from the eye-watering fees being floated for other wide forwards.

For comparison, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers would cost north of £80m and could even push towards £100m. Everton have no intention of letting Iliman Ndiaye go cheaply either. Matias Fernandez-Pardo at Lille offers promise but no Premier League experience. Summerville ticks that box already.

So while United admire Rogers, Ndiaye and Fernandez-Pardo, the equation is simple: price, availability, and readiness. Right now, Summerville looks like the most realistic solution.

World Cup reminder of Summerville’s ceiling

If his club campaign felt underwhelming at times, his World Cup with the Netherlands told a different story. Summerville delivered two goals and two assists in four matches, a burst of end product that underlined why top clubs keep circling.

That form made West Ham’s struggles all the more striking. He showed on the biggest stage that he can hurt high-level opposition, only for the Netherlands to suffer a surprise last-32 exit to Morocco.

It is that blend of raw pace, direct running and final-ball threat that has caught the eye at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas describes Summerville as “emerging as a top left-wing target” for United. The club’s primary drive this summer is to strengthen midfield, but the hierarchy at Old Trafford also want a new left-sided attacker. Summerville is described as a “leading” option and is “firmly on United’s radar”.

Liverpool step back, United step forward

The path to a deal has become clearer in recent weeks. The Athletic reported on June 23 that Liverpool explored a move for Summerville earlier in the year, only to cool their interest.

That decision has left United in a strong position. Arsenal are monitoring the situation, but at this stage, it is United who look best placed to act if they choose to push ahead.

The price is high enough to make any club think twice. Yet compared with the £80m–£100m being mentioned for other targets, £50m for a 24-year-old with Premier League and World Cup pedigree feels like a calculated gamble rather than a wild swing.

Rashford’s future holds the key

There is, however, a major variable: Marcus Rashford.

Sky Sports report that any move for Summerville could hinge on what happens with Rashford when he returns to Carrington after the World Cup. Barcelona’s £26m option to buy has expired, leaving his future back in United’s hands.

Rashford would prefer a return to Barcelona, but he is open to being reintegrated into the United squad under Michael Carrick. That puts the decision squarely on the new manager and INEOS.

If Carrick sees Rashford as central to his plans on the left, the urgency for Summerville drops. If Rashford is given only a limited role, or if another twist develops in his future, United may feel compelled to move decisively for the West Ham winger.

The dynamic is delicate. One established England international on one side, a hungry, ascending Dutch international on the other. Both favour the same patch of grass.

INEOS sketch out their left side

Inside Old Trafford, the planning has already started. On Friday, club reporter Laurie Whitwell confirmed that Summerville and Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall are two players of interest to INEOS as they look to reshape United’s left side.

It hints at a broader strategy: younger, more dynamic, more resale value, but with enough top-level exposure to step straight into the Premier League spotlight.

Summerville fits that profile neatly. West Ham’s valuation reflects it.

With Liverpool out of the way, Arsenal watching from a distance, and United weighing up Rashford’s role, the stage is set. If INEOS decide this is the summer to redraw United’s left wing, Summerville’s name is already written in bold on the shortlist.
