Liverpool Declares Rio Ngumoha Untouchable Amid Bayern Interest
Bayern Munich thought they had found a secret route into Liverpool’s future. Liverpool have just bricked it up.
On a busy afternoon of transfer intrigue, reports in England and Germany painted a picture of Bayern quietly moving for Rio Ngumoha, the 17-year-old winger widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects on Merseyside. By the evening, Liverpool’s response was loud and unmistakable: absolutely no sale.
Bayern’s quiet move goes public
The story first surfaced when David Ornstein reported that Bayern were “exploring” a move for Ngumoha, identifying the teenager as a primary target for their left flank. The Bundesliga giants, Ornstein wrote, see the Liverpool youngster as a key option and are fully aware of his situation, even if there has been no direct contact between the clubs.
Liverpool’s stance, though, was made clear in the same breath: Ngumoha is not for sale. The club intend to strengthen their attack, not chip away at it.
The plot thickened minutes later in Germany.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg revealed that Vincent Kompany had already held personal talks with Ngumoha. Bayern, he reported, had been negotiating for weeks and even reached a full verbal agreement with the player and his camp on 26 May, with Ngumoha earmarked as an “absolute priority” back-up to Luis Díaz, alongside their interest in Anthony Gordon.
For Bayern, this was no speculative enquiry. It was a plan.
Then it collapsed.
Plettenberg stated that the deal fell apart on Thursday, at least “for the time being”, leaving Bayern to assess other potential club-to-club agreements while Kompany’s approval of the Ngumoha move counted for nothing in the face of Liverpool’s resistance.
FSG draw a hard line
If there was any doubt about Liverpool’s position, Fabrizio Romano removed it.
Posting later in the evening, Romano underlined that Liverpool’s view on Ngumoha has been consistent “for months”: he is “untouchable”. Internally, the 17-year-old is seen as a crucial part of the club’s long-term project, and there is “no chance” of an exit this summer.
That wording matters. This is not a polite rejection or a soft “not right now”. It is a firm refusal from a club and ownership group, Fenway Sports Group, who know exactly what kind of asset they are protecting.
Bayern came looking for a future star to tuck in behind Díaz. Liverpool’s answer was simple: find him somewhere else.
The message to the rest of Europe is just as clear. If you want to test Liverpool’s resolve over Rio Ngumoha, you’re already too late.
