Lionel Messi is edging towards the end of his glittering international journey, and Argentina can already feel the weight of what comes next.
At 39, he will walk away as the country's undisputed standard-bearer: record appearance maker, record goalscorer, the man who finally carried the Albiceleste to the 2022 World Cup. His numbers are staggering – 125 goals in 207 caps – but the void he leaves goes far beyond statistics.
Alexis Mac Allister knows it. And he isn’t pretending otherwise.
“There will never be another like him”
Speaking to ESPN, the midfielder laid bare the sense of gratitude – and looming loss – inside the Argentina camp.
"The words for Messi are always the same: gratitude, and the realisation that there will never be another like him," Mac Allister said. "We've enjoyed our time with him immensely. We're also grateful to him for everything he's helped us win. It's sure to be a very emotional occasion."
That emotion is tied not only to what Messi has done, but to what comes after. The team that built itself around the best player in the world now has to imagine itself without him.
"It will be a different process with new players coming in," Mac Allister admitted. "We need to start realising that the best player in the world, the one who made all the difference, won't be there anymore, and that we'll have to grow stronger as a team."

Ballon d'Or backing
Messi’s individual legacy is already secure, but one more major honour could still land at his feet. Asked about his captain’s chances of lifting another Ballon d'Or, Mac Allister didn’t hesitate.
"As Argentines we'd love for Messi to win it. He had an incredible World Cup and I don't see why he shouldn't be awarded it," he said.
Then came the reminder of what has always set Messi apart inside that dressing room.
"We all know that Leo has always prioritised the team over individual achievements, so it wouldn't be a big deal for him."
For the squad, though, it would be another crowning moment for the player who changed their history.
Uncertainty at Anfield
While Messi’s horizon is clear – a farewell that will shake a nation – Mac Allister’s own future looks far less defined.
The Liverpool midfielder has already voiced disappointment that the club have not moved to extend his contract, especially after fellow midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai secured new deals. He stayed put during the summer despite chances to leave Anfield, but the long-term picture remains cloudy.
"There's no firm decision yet. I still have two years left on my contract," he explained. "As I said, I'm going to give it my all. A lot can happen in that time; there are plenty of options."
The uncertainty has not dimmed his view of where he is, or what it means.
"Hopefully it'll be for more years, but if it's just two, I'll have to enjoy them with my family, because I have no doubt that I'm at one of the best clubs in the world."
