Karim Coulibaly Leaves Werder Bremen for Strasbourg
Karim Coulibaly’s rapid Bremen rise has reached its first major crossroads. The 20-year-old central defender has left Werder Bremen to join French side Strasbourg, ending a two-year spell that turned a youth prospect into a Bundesliga regular.
Coulibaly arrived in the summer of 2024 from local rivals Hamburg, initially slotting into Werder’s U19s. It did not stay that way for long. By the 2025/26 campaign he had forced his way into the senior side and stayed there, making 27 Bundesliga appearances and establishing himself as a key figure at the back, as well as a Germany youth international to watch.
For Werder, his departure cuts both ways: sporting loss, financial gain.
“Karim is a prime example of the path we have chosen: signing young, promising players and creating value with them,” said managing director of football Clemens Fritz as the transfer was announced. “He has made exemplary use of his opportunity with us and developed into a regular starter in the Bundesliga. Even though his departure is a difficult one for us from a sporting perspective, we are fulfilling our financial responsibility by making him such a lucrative offer.”
The message is clear. Bremen’s model worked exactly as designed — perhaps a little too well for those who wanted to see Coulibaly anchoring their defence for years to come.
Coulibaly’s own words underlined how neatly the plan had unfolded.
“When I joined Werder two years ago, the management outlined a clear path for me, which has been fulfilled 100 percent,” he said. He then reeled off a list of thanks: teammates, coaches, staff, the club hierarchy, friends, family, and “of course the fans for their support and trust, for every wonderful moment, but also for every difficult situation from which I was able to learn.”
His farewell line carried the weight of someone who knows this is only the beginning: “Werder Bremen will always remain a special part of my story and my life.”
Bremen lose a home-grown success story in everything but birthplace. Strasbourg gain a 20-year-old centre-back already hardened by a full Bundesliga season. The next chapter of Coulibaly’s story will be written in France — the question now is how fast he climbs from here.
