João Cancelo Returns to Barcelona: Permanent Signing Until 2029
João Cancelo is a Barcelona player again – this time with no asterisk, no loan clause, no summer uncertainty. The Portuguese full-back has joined FC Barcelona on a permanent deal from Al Hilal, signing a three-season contract that ties him to the club until 2029.
It is his third spell in blaugrana colours, but the first with real long-term weight behind it. After previous loan moves, Barça have now moved to lock in a player whose profile has become almost synonymous with the modern attacking full-back: aggressive on the front foot, comfortable drifting inside, and technically sharp enough to operate as an extra midfielder.
Cancelo did not hide his mood on arrival. “I'm ready to play,” he said, underlining both his fitness and his impatience to get started. No adaptation period, no easing in. He knows the club, knows the stadium, knows the expectations. That matters at a club where full-backs are asked to do far more than simply defend their flank.
For Barcelona, the move settles a position that has been patched together in recent seasons. Cancelo offers an immediate starter’s level, Champions League experience and tactical flexibility on either side of the defence, all on a contract long enough for the coaching staff to build a structure around him rather than work week to week.
The message is clear: Cancelo is no longer a short-term fix. He is part of the medium-term spine, and he has come back to Camp Nou to play a leading role, not a cameo.
