Joao Cancelo Signs Permanent Deal with Barcelona
Barcelona finally have Joao Cancelo for keeps.
The club confirmed the Portuguese full-back’s arrival with a flurry of posts on its official X account, drawing a line under a long, stop-start negotiation process and turning a familiar loanee into a permanent piece of the project.
Third time, but different
This is Cancelo’s third spell in Barcelona colours, yet the first that comes with full ownership. He first landed at the club on loan from Manchester City for the 2023-24 season, then returned on another temporary deal from Al-Hilal in the second half of last season.
Now he signs a three-year contract that runs through to 2029, tying him to the Spotify Camp Nou well into the back end of his career.
The route to that deal was anything but straightforward. Earlier reports indicated Cancelo would arrive as a free agent after reaching an agreement with Al-Hilal to terminate his contract, with the player understood to have given up the remainder of his financial dues to secure the exit.
Proven output in Catalonia
Barcelona know exactly what they are getting. Over a season and a half in Catalonia, Cancelo has already played 65 matches in all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying nine assists. His attacking surges from full-back became a key feature of the side’s play, and he finished last season with a La Liga title to show for it.
That familiarity clearly mattered. Rather than gamble on an untested profile, the club doubled down on a defender who has already shown he can handle the demands, the pressure and the ball at Barcelona.
Saudi chapter closed
Cancelo’s move also closes a short, uneven chapter with Al-Hilal. He joined the Saudi club in the summer of 2024 and spent two seasons on their books, but effectively played just one campaign after being cut from the domestic squad last term.
Across those 45 appearances in all competitions for Al-Hilal, he registered three goals and 14 assists, numbers that underline his creative influence from deep even if they did not translate into silverware. He leaves Saudi Arabia without a trophy to his name.
Another piece in a busy window
For Barcelona, this is not an isolated move but part of a broader rebuild. Cancelo becomes the club’s fifth new signing of the summer window.
He follows England winger Anthony Gordon, German forward Karim Adeyemi, Spanish midfielder Rodri and Belgian talent Jesse Bisiou through the door, while the club have also activated a purchase clause to keep young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim.
Experience at full-back, fresh legs in attack, a deeper bench. Barcelona are not just reshaping a squad; they are locking in a core. And with Cancelo now signed until 2029, the right flank looks spoken for in the next phase of their evolution.
